D5 Live Bringing Excitement To Schools

Classrooms are lighting up across District Five, as D5 Live, the District's one-to-one initiative, kicks into full gear!

Thousands of laptops have been distributed to all students in grades 3-8, as part of the program.  At schools like D.R. Hill and Florence Chapel Middle School, students are already able to take those devices home, extending their learning beyond the classroom.

Under the leadership of Chief Technology Officer, Dr. Jeff Rogers, and Director of Instructional Technology, Amanda Dobson, the initiative has gotten off to a great start.  Also, our District Five technology training team, made up of Matt Feiling, David Kalk, Kelly Gerhardt, and Geoff Turner, continue to do a fantastic job of helping teachers throughout the district integrate the technology into their daily lessons.

Click below to watch a fun video of when laptops were distributed at both Florence Chapel and D.R. HIll Middle School.

Class Gives Assistant Principals Lesson on Leadership

Assistant Principals from across District Five are sharpening their leadership skills this school year, in a unique class offered through the D5 Explore professional development program.

Assistant Superintendent of Administration and Operations, Dr. Greg Wood, is leading the cohort, which will focus on enhancing leadership and technical skills required of Assistant Principals.

The class will meet monthly throughout the school year.

Lyman Races To The Finish Line

Students at Lyman Elementary School laced up their running shoes, and hit the track to support their school this week!

The school held its 3rd annual Boosterthon Fun Run Thursday, where students in all grades run laps to raise money for school activities and programs.  The Boosterthon program promotes fitness and teamwork, while also teaching students about character through interactive lessons leading up to the event.

Students were each challenged to run 35 laps during the 45 minute run, and they had fun doing it!

So far, with the helps of families and friends, Lyman students have already raised more than $12,000 for the fundraiser, and more funds are still coming in!

Great job, Lyman!

D.R. Hill Banding Together For Flood Victims

Flood victims in Louisiana will soon receive some encouraging words to lift their spirits, thanks to band students in Kaci Cotter's class at D.R. Hill Middle School!

This week, Kotter got the idea to send cards and notes of encouragement to schools in the flood-ravaged state.  Students participated in the same act of kindness last year, after residents in Columbia and the coastal part of South Carolina were affected by horrible flooding.

We're proud of you, D.R. Hill students!

Gates Give Byrnes Extra Layer Of Security

The Byrnes High School cafeteria courtyard got a makeover this week, and it's one that brings some additional security for students and staff!

New fencing and gates were installed in the courtyard area, preventing access to the frequently used space by visitors.  The addition compliments the new Phase I construction project that is ongoing at Byrnes, which will greatly enhance student safety and security campus wide.

River Ridge Makes Memorable Learning Lesson

4th graders at River Ridge Elementary School recently took a trip back in time, as they turned memories into a fun learning lesson!

Students in Mrs. Scott's and Mrs. Sizemore classes at River Ridge recently read the book, "Wilfrid Gordon McDonald Partridge", by Mem Fox. The mentor text stirred up several of the students' precious memories, which they got to share with classmates and their families!

The students invited their parents into their classroom to share their memories in the form of a "memory box".  Each student designed their own, and filled it with items that respresented their special memories.

Keep up the great work, River Ridge!
Royalty Comes To Reidville

If you took a peek inside Sarah Smith's classroom at Reidville Elementary this week, you might have caught a glimpse of real royalty!

On Wednesday, Ms. South Carolina United States, Anna Catherine English, visited Smith's 2nd grade class, sharing a book and a few lessons on leadership and perseverance with the students.  English recently competed for the title of Ms. United States, and was awarded 3rd runner up in the national competition.  In her spare time, she is also one of the Varsity cheerleading coaches at Byrnes High School.

As part of her platform, "Read, Lead, Achieve", English brought a brand new book for every student in Smith's class.  Special thanks to Anna Catherine for sharing with our students!

Following a huge victory over Greer last week at home, the Byrnes High School Rebels are hoping to continue their good luck against Mallard Creek this weekend.

They'll have to wait an extra day to do so, though.

Because of the expected forecast in the Charlotte area, the Rebels game has now been moved to Saturday night at 7:00 p.m. at Mallard Creek.  Byrnes is looking to beat the Mavericks for the 2nd year in a row.

The gate for fans will open at 5:30 p.m. and tickets are $6.  Come out and support our team!  GO REBELS!

The Lady Rebels beat their opponents, 2-1 and 2-0, respectively.

Then, they went on to take down Mauldin, Spartanburg Day School, and Landrum, in a quad match Thursday.  The team had its best match of the season against Mauldin.  Senior Emily Morrison spread the ball around and finished with 14 assists, while Senior Taylor Guthrie led the team with 8 kills.

The Lady Rebels will have a home match Tuesday, September 6, against Broome.  Please come out and support our team!
