'Speechless' Looks To Get People Talking
[Source:  Disability Scoop]

When it comes to writing, people love to advise "write what you know."

But Scott Silveri, creator and showrunner of ABC's new family comedy "Speechless," would be the first to tell you that crafting a narrative out of your own experiences is nowhere near as easy as it seems.

The study involved 161 children aged six to eight years old, with researchers following the students from the first grade to the third grade.

The quality of their diet was analyzed using food diaries, and their academic skills with the help of standardized tests.

Scientists ID Concussion Treatment for Persistant Childhood Cases
[Source:  Medical X-Press]

Concussions can create a host of symptoms-headache, dizziness, moodiness, upset stomach and other issues. In most cases, those symptoms eventually dissipate, but about 15% of young people who get concussions struggle with persistent symptoms despite seeing doctors and receiving medical care. The ongoing symptoms interfere with school, social life and physical activity.

Similarities/Differences Between Children and Adolescents Who Commit Suicide
[Source: Science Daily]

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), suicide was the 10th leading cause of death for children ages 5 to 11 in 2014. This was the first time suicide had shown up in the CDC's top ten leading causes of death for children in this age group.

A recent study from Arielle Sheftall, PhD, a postdoctoral research fellow in the Center for Suicide Prevention and Research at Nationwide Children's Hospital demonstrates that some individual characteristics and precipitating circumstances may be more prominent in children who die by suicide compared with early adolescents who die by suicide. It is the first study to exclusively focus on precipitating circumstances of suicide in children and

This Fall  tree craft is a fun way to sneak fine motor strengthening into a Fall craft with the kids.

Book Review:
Blaine Blows His Top-Book review & Free Printable

[Source: Chapel Hill Snippets]

School has started down here in NC, along with the passage of tropical storm remnants.  Life goes on as usual!

A speech-language pathologist, Bethany Vigilante, asked me to take a look at her book,Blaine Blows His Top, and review it.  This seemed like a great book to use with a social skills group (4/5th grade and middle school) so I did!

It's hard to believe that football season is just around the corner.  The teams are already in training camps and the news is already reporting on the upcoming season.  Football is a great theme to incorporate into gross motor play.  A fun way that I like to incorporate football into gross motor play is through the football relay.

SLP Corner:  It's OK to Not Know the Answer Sometimes
by Eric X. Raj

Let me walk you through a scenario that I think a lot of us speech-language pathologists have been in before. You're having a meeting about a student with a parent or another educator and someone asks you a question. However, as smart as you are (and trust me, I know you're VERY smart), you might not actually KNOW the answer to this specific question off the top of your head.

What do you do in a scenario like this?

School Nurse Corner: Talking to Teens About Risky Behaviors
[Source:  School-Based Health Alliance]

Dr. Jennifer Salerno has learned a lot about connecting with teens through her clinical work as a nurse practitioner in school-based health centers (SBHCs). Imagine a team without a coach guiding players toward working together to execute a winning strategy. Imagine a company without a leader to make sure that employees across departments are equipped and organized to collaborate on continually improving products and increasing sales. Imagine a marching band without a drum major to lead musicians through their complicated maneuvers while staying on beat.

S chool Psych Corner:   How Domestic Violence In One Home Affects Every Child In A Class
[Source:  Mind Shift]

Part of our NPR Ed series on mental health in schools.

Every Monday morning at Harvie Elementary School, in Henrico County, Va., Brett Welch stands outside her office door as kids file in.

"The first thing I'm looking for are the faces," says Welch, a school counselor. She's searching for hints of fear, pain or anger.

"Maybe there was a domestic incident at the house that weekend," says Welch. "That's reality for a lot of our kids."
