School News
Byrnes Remembers 9-11

Some Byrnes High School students stepped out of their classrooms Friday, to see firsthand a lesson that's difficult to capture in a history book.

Led by cadets from the school's AFJROTC unit, Byrnes students, staff, and community members paused to remember 9-11, fifteen years after the tragedy happened.

The solemn event featured moving performances by the Byrnes singers and orchestra, along with a commemorative flag retirement ceremony.

Abner Creek Students Bring Their "A" Game

Dozens of students at Abner Creek Academy read their way to a big celebration last week!

It was all part of the school's "Game On" reading challenged, issued at the end of last school year.  Students were encouraged to read over the summer, and checked off a game board as they finished certain books.

In all, 90 students completed the challenged and were treated to a special afternoon, filled with their favorite games.

Way to go, Abner Creek!

Crime Comes To Beech Springs Classroom

Students at Beech Springs Intermediate School recently became crime scene investigators, all for the sake of learning!

Students in Nicole Gilbert's science classes recently participated in a crime scene investigation exercise, to practice making observations and inferences.

Before the exercise, students were trained about what goes into good investigating, and how detectives figure out what happened.

It was a great lesson in teamwork!

Keep up the good work, Beech Springs!

Boosterthon Brings Excitement To River Ridge

Ready, set, run!

Hundreds of River Ridge Elementary School students laced up their running shoes, and raced to the finish line this week, for a great cause!

The school held its annual Boosterthon "Fun Run", encouraging students to run laps in exchange for pledges of financial support for their school.  Promoting teamwork and character, the Boosterthon program provides schools with a creative way to raise funds, while supporting physical fitness at the same time.

So far, with the help of families and friends, River Ridge students have raised more than $17,000, to support activities and programs at their school!  They also earned a "bonus weekend", so organizers expect more funds to come in over the weekend.

Great job, River Ridge!

Duncan Skates For Flood Victims

Students at Duncan Elementary School laced up their roller skates last week to help neighbors in need.

The school held its annual Back to School celebration at Reobuck Skate Center, inviting students, parents, teachers and administrators to roll around the rink for a good cause!  The proceeds raised from the event, nearly $200, will be donated to help Louisiana flood victims.

It was a fun time for everyone!

Way to go, Duncan!

Book "Tasting" Brings Love For Reading

For students at Beech Springs Intermediate School, it was like walking into a delicious restaurant.  Only, the setting was the school's library, and books were the featured items on the menu!

Students in Teresa Burnett's class recently participated in a "book tasting" in the Beech Springs media center.  Students were able to preview several books available, and used a menu to record their thoughts and observations.  The class chose an appetizer, entree, and even a dessert book to preview!

Students left with a great taste for reading and books!

Great job, Beech Springs!

A Special Celebration At The Creek

It was a celebration fit for a "queen" at Abner Creek Academy this week, as the school surprised its beloved custodian, Ms. Bessie!

In honor of her 50th birthday, the school treated Ms. Bessie to gifts and sweet notes and cards from Abner Creek students.

Happy birthday Ms. Bessie!

Middle School Athletic Notes

It was a big week for athletics at both Florence Chapel Middle School and D.R. Hill Middle School, as students competed in several sports.

Florence Chapel's 7th grade football team defeated D.R. Hill in a hard fought game, 48-14.

On the 8th grade field, D.R. Hill took the win, beating Florence Chapel 24-20.

In volleyball, Florence Chapel competed in a preseason tournament at High Point Academy   on Saturday  finishing tied for 3rd out of 18 teams. The team took on McCracken Wednesday, beating them in 4 games.

Coach Branch said, "
Tayla Reini has stepped up to lead the cougar volleyball team on and off the court so far this season. She brings a positive attitude and worker's mentality everyday. She is coach-able and continues to grow as a respectable, young lady each day. I can see why the girls voted on her as one of our captains."
Photo of the Week

Talk about amazing!  This is Gage Christian, a student in Allison Burger and Teresa Loving's class at Abner Creek Academy.  Gage, who was non-verbal just 2 years ago, showed off his reading skills this week reading the class's monthly story book "We Work Together".  Great job, Gage!
