Wellford Works To Save Environment, Thanks To Donation
Lunch time at
Wellford Academy is looking a little different this year, and we're not talking about the menu!
This year,
Wellford students are enjoying their meals, but also learning to help the environment at the same time. The school has partnered with Atlas Organics, an Upstate based company that specializes in recycling food waste. The company works with schools, turning leftovers into valuable compost that can be used in the agriculture and landscaping industries.
Atlas employees recently visited the school, teaching students what waste can be recycled. Students now separate their lunch leftovers into special bins, which are collected by the company and composted at a nearby facility.
District Five was able to pilot the program at
Wellford this year, thanks to a generous donation from OmniSource Metal Recycling. Company representatives
Bryan Goldman and Summer Reid presented a $3500 check to
Wellford
principal, Mrs. Angie Showalter, Friday. Jim Davis with Atlas Organics and Brandon Lewis,
Chartwells Food Service Director, were also on hand for the presentation.
District Five is very grateful to Atlas Organics and OmniSource for this great partnership.
Way to go,
Wellford!

Beech Springs Goes For The Gold
The Olympics may be over, but the celebration is still going on at
Beech Springs Intermediate School! The school held its own "Olympic sized" celebration recently, to reward student success in the classroom.
As part of the school's ELA curriculum this year, 5th and 6th graders at
Beech Springs have been working hard to learn about different communities, from global to classroom, and how they can help contribute to their successes. Last Friday, students and teachers came together in the gym to celebrate student learning and participation in their classroom communities.
Guest speaker, Byrnes basketball head coach Layne Fowler, spoke to students about community, endurance, and perseverance.
The event ended with a great Olympic parade of flags, where each classroom presented its own flag designed and created by students.
Great job,
Beech Springs!

Duncan Goes Grand For Special Visitors
Grandparents give the best hugs and typically always say yes, but nothing is better than having them show up to school for your Grandparent's Luncheon!
A big crowd made it out for Duncan Elementary's annual event, filling the cafeteria with many grandparent visitors! The day was extra special, thanks to their presence. And of course, who could resist one of their favorite people showing up with a special lunch...from Zaxby's, Chick-fil-a, or McDonald's! What more could a kid ask for? Check out the love Duncan grandparents showed in honor of Grandparent's Day. More pictures are located on their school website photo gallery here.
