| NLRB Treats Charter Schools as Private Corporations |

A decision by the National Labor Relations Board in two separate cases last week stated that charter schools are not public schools, but are, in fact, private corporations.
While the decisions only apply to the cases in question, involving efforts to unionize at charter schools in New York and Pennsylvania, the labor board will now find themselves at the center of a debate concerning the nature of charter schools. Publicly funded but privately run, the institutions enroll close to three million students across the country.

Language Learning Boosts Brain Plasticity and Ability to Code New Information

By studying brain electrical activity of volunteers, researchers found that language acquisition enhances brain plasticity and capacity for learning. In particular, they note that early language learning plays a significant role in the rapid formation of memory circuits for coding new information

Harvard Study Suggests Cesarean Delivery Linked to Obesity
|

Individuals born by cesarean delivery were 15% more likely to become obese as children than individuals born by vaginal birth-and the increased risk may persist through adulthood, according to a large new study from Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health. In addition, individuals born via cesarean delivery were 64% more likely to be obese than their siblings born by vaginal birth.
The study will be published online September 6, 2016 inJAMA Pediatrics

With New Mandate, Special Ed Classrooms Get Cameras

Ten years after she first asked the Keller school district and state lawmakers to install cameras in classrooms for children with special needs as a safety measure, Breggett Rideau is finally seeing her request fulfilled.
Beginning this school year, Senate Bill 507 requires Texas school districts to install, operate and maintain video cameras and video-audio recording equipment in some special education classrooms if a parent, trustee or staff member requests it. The system is intended to ensure the safety of students with disabilities in classrooms where they spend more than half their school day.

School Nurse News: OTC Head Lice Treatments Likely to Fail

A recent review on head lice treatments available in the United States described a marked decline in the effectiveness of permethrin/synergized pyrethrins (collectively pyrethroids), likely due to resistance arising from widespread and indiscriminate use over 30 years.
The review also noted that the potential toxicity of lindane, and the availability of safer and more effective alternatives, should limit its use. Prescription products that are safe and effective include malathion, benzyl alcohol, spinosad, and topical ivermectin.

Emotion Management Skills

"An emotion is defined as anything that a person feels when he or she assesses an event in a specific way. It usually leads to physiological alterations or behaviour changes. Thus, all emotions are in essence impulses to act. Consequently, emotions lead to acts that we can comprehend". (Goleman, 2001)
An emotion is a complex, subjective, conscious experience: it is a combination of cognitive states, psychosomatic expressions and biological reactions of the body.

participants made on select school readiness indicators after one year of program participation faded by the end of first and third grade.

Can Exercise Help Dyslexia?

Between 10% to 15% of the U.S. population has dyslexia, yet only five out of every 100 dyslexics are diagnosed, according to the Dyslexia Research Institute in Tallahassee, Fla.
Many people incorrectly think dyslexia is a reading problem in which children reverse letters, says Sally E. Shaywitz, a professor of learning development and co-director of the Yale Center for Dyslexia & Creativity in New Haven, Conn.
