Board of Trustees Report
The District Five Schools Board of Trustees is officially back in session, as members held their first meeting of the 2016-17 school year this week!
The meeting began with a celebration, as the Board honored four River Ridge
Elementary School students for participating in the national Invention Convention in Washington, D.C. Conner Page, Aubrey Mayse, Noah McGarity, and Arielle Greer were among just a few hundred students selected from across the country to participate in the first-ever event. The River Ridge students were chosen after excellent performances at the local Duke Energy Invention Convention in March.
Superintendent Dr. Scott Turner presented each with a certificate recognizing their achievement. 5th grader Arielle Greer, who received the overall Healthcare Award at the national competition, received a 2nd certificate for her win.
In other news, the Board received several reports from District Five administrators. Here's some hightlights:
- Barry Reese, Director of Procurement, gave the board his annual procurement report, which included 2 emergency procurements due to a hail storm in March. Reese also briefed the board on the district's Minority Business Enterprise Plan, in which the district exceeded its goal this year, spending more than 10% with minority owned businesses.
- Chief Technology Officer Jeff Rogers updated the board on D5Live, the district's 1:1 initiative in grades 3-8. Rogers presented an overview of the D5Live website, which you can view here.
- Dr. Ashley Atkinson, Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum and Instruction, reported to the board on the many summer school activities and programs that District Five students have participated in.
- Dr. Greg Wood, Assistant Superintendent of Administration and Operations, provided an update for the Board on construction at Byrnes High School and Lyman Elementary, as well as the installation of portable classrooms at Reidville Elementary School.

District Five was also among the top 10 scoring districts in South Carolina.
Byrnes students also posted the highest average scores in Spartanburg County in the subjects of English, Reading, and Science.

District Employee Applauded For Actions
Tabitha Kelty is known around District Five for doing her job well, but administrators say the Byrnes High School custodian went above the call of duty last week.
As Kelty made her normal rounds cleaning the Byrnes 900 building early last Wednesday evening, she heard the building's fire alarm go off. Rather than dismiss it, she returned to Schofield gymnasium to check it out. There, she discovered a scary site. A trash can inside the gym was fully engulfed in flames, after chemicals from a floor waxing earlier in the day self-combusted.
The Byrnes custodian quickly and calmly rushed to get a fire extinguisher and put out the flames, preventing major damage. The whole thing was captured on security camera footage, further showing Kelty's brave actions.
Superintendent Dr. Scott Turner presented Kelty with a certificate of appreciation, honoring her for her actions. We appreciate you, Tabitha!

Florence Chapel Band Celebrates Big Achievement
Florence Chapel Middle School's band and director,
Alicia Crutchlow, are striking up a happy tune this week, after receiving a huge honor!
Students learned late last week they have been selected to perform at this year's South Carolina Music Educator's Association (SCMEA) Conference in Columbia on February 4. Event organizers select only one band from across the state each year for the honor, and rarely choose a middle school.
Congratulations students and
Alicia Crutchlow! We are so proud of you!

Byrnes Students Honored In Writing Contest
You might say students in
Susanne Cash's AP English Language class at
Byrnes HIgh School have a bit of a winning streak going.
For yet another year, students in
Cash's class have been named winners in well-known USC Honors College writing contest! Nine students in Cash's class were among a few dozen selected statewide as finalists this year. The students traveled to Columbia in the spring to participate final round of competition, including a timed essay, and luncheon with author, Mary Alice Monroe.
Overall winners were then selected, and
Byrnes seniors Erin Hackney and Sarah Finleyson were among the honorees! Hackney took 2nd place in the Junior Division, while Finleyson was awarded with an Honorable Mention.
Congratulations to these two outstanding students!

Seeing Science Up Close At Abner Creek
Students in
Katie McDade's class at
Abner Creek Academy are wasting no time sharpening their science skills this year!
Fourth graders recently took their learning outdoors for a lesson on the process of evaporation. A drop of water was placed on the pavement, and students brought out their observation skills to see when the water disappeared, and changed from a liquid to vapor.
Keep up the good work,
Abner Creek!

Rebels Sting Yellow Jackets
Following a tough loss in the first game of the season, the
Byrnes Rebels bounced back in their home opener, beating Greer, 45-7. The
Rebels victory over the Yellow Jackets makes their record 1-1 for the season so far.
In a special tribute, the team honored former player, Markell Nesbitt, who tragically drowned on Lyman Lake this summer. Fans paused for a moment of silence just before kickoff, and the Rebel Regiment formed a "23" on the field, honoring the late player's jersey number.
The
Rebels will travel to Mallard Creek High School near Charlotte to take on the Mavericks this Friday night. Kick off is set for 7:30 p.m.
Put on your Rebel blue and come out and support our team! GO REBELS!
