St. Thomas School Newsletter
September 7, 2016
Dear St. Thomas Families,

This Friday is Grandparents Day and Day of Prayer for Peace.  The main entrance to the school will open at 7:30 a.m.  and after morning prayer, students will meet their Grandparents in the gym providing a tour of the school and their classrooms.  At 8:50 a.m., Grandparents and the students will proceed to the church for Day of Prayer Service.

In addition to September 9th Day of Prayer Service,   Bishop Foys will celebrate Solemn Vespers on Sunday, September 11, 2016 at 3:00 p.m. at the Cathedral Basilica commemorating the 15th Anniversary of the terrorist attacks on our country.  "Local fire/police/first responders will be invited so that we may show our support for the services and gratitude for services they provide to our local communities".

I-Ready "kick-off" is scheduled to begin today, September 7th for grades 1-6.  I-Ready is an online program that will help us assess your child's individual needs and monitor their progress throughout the school year.  Past data shows that students who used I-Ready for 30 minutes per week grew 44% more in Reading than the average students.  The Language Arts/Reading teachers will communicate with parents on their student(s) diagnostic results and progress.

Planning ahead, St. Thomas will be continuing their involvement with the Global Education Initiative.  This program will provide our children an opportunity for first hand experiences with people from other countries and cultures teaching them to investigate the world, recognize perspectives, communicate ideas, and take action.  We formed a committee to tackle the planning and logistics. The committee has decided to work with the International School to School Exchange (ISSE) because of the organization's well established program and experience. Our goal in March is to serve as a host school for a visiting delegation of students.  To that end, the Global Education Committee is looking for families willing to open their homes and host a 5th or 6th grade student.  The duration of the hosting will be approximately two weeks.  A meeting for our school families to learn more about this program will be announced soon.  You can also learn more about ISSE on their website at www.isseonline.com .

As a continued fundraiser, we are collecting Box Tops, Tyson and Campbell Soup labels.  In order to receive the full value for a Campbell Soup label, please include the UPC code and point value that's printed on the label.  You can send with your student or drop them off in the school office.

 Have a blessed week.
