Listed below are several books that I have been recommending within my practice, some of them for many years now.  I thought it might be helpful to share them with my audience, in the hopes that you may see one that interests you and could inspire your everyday life.  These are not books for those in crisis, but for those who wish to enhance the relationship they have with themselves or others.

While it is nice to think we have all the answers all the time, I encourage you to look at the topic of expanding your knowledge as a topic to be welcomed, not avoided.  You have the choice to accept new knowledge and use it, or not.  The choice always remains yours.

May you find the information useful and actually visit a local bookstore or online source and consider purchasing one or more of them for your own benefit.  If you know of other books which have enhanced your life, I welcome your feedback and the book information.

As always, please pass along this newsletter to anyone you feel may benefit from it's content.

Sincerely,

From The Positive Perspective......

Love and Logic Magic for Lasting Relationships
by Jim Fay and Dr. David B Hawkins. The Love and Logic Magic series was created for interacting with children.  One of the founders of the program collaborated with a marriage and family counselor to create the only guide in the series for working within a couples' relationship.  The helpful tips and points of view presented can help you to look at your relationship from a new and improved angle; one with a more fair and balanced approach.

Parents Are Forever: A Step-by-Step Guide to Becoming Successful Coparents After Divorce by Shirley Thomas, Ph.D. When divorce occurs and there are children involved, those children need to be the main focus initially.  Some divorcing parents may forget that and only think of the challenging situation they are in, without considering their children's point of view.  Thinking of yourself as a coparent, instead of a hurt spouse, can help you to make better, less emotional decisions through this challenging period.

The 5 Love Languages: The Secret To Love That Lasts by Gary Chapman. This book contains an assessment in the back, one for husbands and one for wives.  The assessment can point you towards what you value in the area of love.  Does love mean "Words of Affirmation", "Physical Touch", "Acts of Service", "Gifts", or "Quality Time" to you?  Once you know what your top one or two love languages are, you can then read about your spouse's love language and learn how to give love that they need, not the love language that you know best.

Power of Inspiration: Dare to Be The Best YOU! By various authors (including myself).  This book contains 15 short stories of Dallas-Fort Worth area individuals who have taken a life challenge of some kind and turned it into a way to give back to others.  Each short story is inspiring in its own right.  If you feel you are too old to begin a new adventure or feel you have very little to offer the world, these true stories could motivate you to bring a new meaning to the word retirement or a new vision of what your future can look like, if you took the time to recognize it.

How to Improve Your Marriage Without Talking About It by Patricia Love, Ed.D. and Steven Stosny, Ph.D. The authors of this book recognize that while verbal exchanges are helpful in a relationship, not everyone likes to talk about their thoughts and feelings.  This book educates couples from a male and a female perspective.  Each perspective gives possible insight into what your partner may or may not be feeling.  You can affect change in your relationship simply by "understanding" where your partner is coming from.  You don't necessarily need to talk about it.

Desensitizing Anger: A Comprehensive Anger Management Guide by John DeMarco, M.Ed., LPC.  This book takes the topic of anger and gives many specific ways to think about and control it in a way I have never read before.  It teaches how to choose your thoughts on anger and manage the emotions involved.  John discusses the 5 types of anger and how they are different, which means they may need to be managed differently as well.  The book also discusses John's automatic thought process regarding anger and how to use that process to keep anger under control in your own world.

10 Simple Solutions to Adult ADD: How to Overcome Chronic Distraction & Accomplish Your Goals by Stephanie Moulton Sarkis, Ph.D. This book was written for someone with ADD for sure.  Clear cut and direct suggestions to help the average adult with ADD or ADHD.  Short chapters with concise suggestions.

Rebuilding: When Your Relationship Ends by Dr. Bruce Fisher and Dr. Robert Alberti.  Not every marriage works out.  Not every relationship is forever, in spite of the effort we put into trying to make it that way.  For those who need to empower themselves with a new life strategy; for those who need a new direction and guidelines to get you there...this book is for you.  This interactive book allows each individual to heal and rebuild at their own pace.

I hope you, or someone you know, can be helped by at least one of these resources listed above. Not every resource is a good one, so be careful when you delve into the world of self-help.  Not every suggestion in every book is for you.  My hope is that you find something of interest that touches a certain part of your life or someone close to you.  Again, I welcome any resources you value as well.
