The Healing Power of Nature

As many of you know, Paul & I are naturopathic physicians, trained to be generalists in the world of natural medicine. Though we love and cherish our homeopathy, it is in the context of naturopathic medicine that we treasure our clinical practice.

This July, at the American Association of Naturopathic
Paul receiving Vis award
Dr. Herscu holding the Vis Award- look closely- it's glass!
Physicians annual conference gala, Paul received our profession's Vis Award which honors and celebrates the life and work of the late Dr. William A. Mitchell, (1947-2007) who embodied the "Vis"- or the healing power of nature. In his acceptance speech, Paul underscored the essential role of vitalism, and how a powerful and elegant approach like homeopathy has a central and essential role in whole-person healing.

As many integrative medicine modalities rush toward the manipulation of biochemistry, which is compelling and effective in its own right, let us always recall the elegance, affordability and broad impact of a good homeopathic prescription! As Paul's admiring partner of 30 years, I couldn't be prouder of this year's Vis Award recipient. Congratulations Dr. Herscu!

And may we bring our collective smarts to work on the issues patients have related to pain, pain management and the addiction to opiate medication. Find below a case from my patient files to help inspire you along in that area.

Happy end of summer!

THE ACCIDENTAL ADDICT:
America's Hidden Opioid Epidemic - Homeopathy's role in pain treatment and recovery from addiction
By Amy Rothenberg ND

Chronic and acute pain are among the most common complaints seen in medical practice. As a consequence, there has been a galloping increase in the prescription use of opioid pain relievers, such as oxycodone (e.g., OxyContin®) and hydrocodone (e.g., Vicodin®). Nearly a quarter of a billion of these prescriptions were written in 2013 alone - enough for every American adult to have their own bottle of pills.

This has led to unintended consequences, such as increased addiction and drug abuse. An estimated one in four patients receiving long-term treatment with opioid painkillers struggles with addiction. In other words, we all know someone dealing with this addiction.
Addiction
Along with this unprecedented epidemic of opioid use comes a flood of accidental overdose deaths. Since 1999, deaths  from prescription opioids have quadrupled; every day, 78 Americans die from an opioid overdose. The recent death of Prince is one more sad example.

Natural medicine can help...
What can homeopathy offer in the face of such dire statistics and such high stakes?
