Resilient Landscapes - Fire-Adapted Communities - Safe and Effective Wildfire Response
The Northeast Regional Strategy Committee (NE RSC) provides executive leadership, coordination, and guidance to carry out the Northeast Regional Action Plan while providing a forum for members to guide strategic direction for fire and land management activities. The NE RSC continues to collaboratively recognize, support, and help with National Cohesive Wildland Fire Management Strategy goals and implementation efforts.

LANDFIRE Update Underway in the Northeast
LANDFIRE and North Atlantic Fire Science Exchange logos.
By Jeannie Patton , Communications Lead, TNC-LANDFIRE

LANDFIRE is an innovative program designed to create and periodically update comprehensive vegetation, fire, and fuel characteristics data using a consistent process for the United States, including Alaska and Hawai'i. LANDFIRE produced and delivered state-and-transition models and descriptions for every major ecological system ( Biophysical Settings, or BpS ) mapped by the program between 2005 and 2009 - information about vegetation dynamics, structure, and composition on lands across the U.S. prior to Euro-American settlement.

The Nature Conservancy's LANDFIRE team sees an
opportunity for collaboration with the Cohesive Strategy effort that can result in a win-win for both.

Our collaboration can begin here: The
Nature Conservancy's LANDFIRE team is leading the update of more than 1,000 BpS models and descriptions - the first since they were delivered - and is soliciting expert opinion and insight.

Delaware Wildfire Crew Headed to Rocky Mountains

SMYRNA, Del. (July 25, 2016) - The Delaware Forest Service is sending a team of 20 wildland firefighters to the Rocky Mountain region for a scheduled two-week assignment to battle wildfires for the National Interagency Fire Center (NIFC). The crew departed Blackbird State Forest this morning and is headed to Denver, CO, to be "pre-positioned" for a specific assignment.

On July 25, the NIFC's National Preparedness Level was increased to 3 on a 5-point scale, a reflection of increased fire activity nationwide as well as hot and dry weather conditions across most of the West. Currently, 26 large fires have burned more than 232,000 acres in 12 states. Four new large fires were reported yesterday in Arkansas, Colorado, Florida, and Wyoming.

Wildland Mobile Technology Working Group Mobile Technology Cheat Sheet 2016
Wildland Fire Information and Technology banner. Forest Service shield is on the left and the U.S. Department of the Interior logo is on the right.

Every year the Working Group puts together a "cheat sheet" for mobile technology within Fire and Aviation Management. Feedback and field information from pilots is consolidated and put together to provide a starting point for the use of mobile tech (primarily apps and devices) in fire.

Of course, this cheat sheet is by NO MEANS all inclusive!! So please -- if you know of other tips/tricks/apps/information that have worked well for you in your fire job or you see lots of folks using...post it to the discussion and add it to the list!

Access the Mobile Technology Cheat Sheet for 2016 via the Wildland Fire Management Research, Development & Application Web site.

What is it?

Wildfires Near Me
is a beta Web application that focuses on keeping you informed about wildfires in your area. You tell the app all the places you care about and you will receive an email or text message when a fire is possibly threatening that location. It's fast, simple, and easy to use. Get the app and more information .
Your Home Can Survive a Wildfire! DVD
NFPA banner
DVD cover for Your Home Can Survive a Wildfire. Decades of research shows that there IS something you can do to keep your home from igniting during a wildfire. This new DVD,  Your Home Can Survive a Wildfire!, shows that sometimes it's the little things that count the most to keep your home safe from a wildfire. During the chaos of a wildfire, these little things might go unnoticed and turn into a big problem for a home and neighborhood. If your home doesn't ignite, it can't burn.

Dr. Jack Cohen, Physical Research Scientist, offers his insight as he assesses a home and its vulnerability to a wildfire.

Supported by new research, this video is a must to see and to share with others during Firewise® days, events, or other community presentations.
