A Day AT The Fair
Sorry to say the McHenry County Fair 2016: Family Roots - Country Boots ended Sunday. The good news is there are just fifty one more weeks to the 2017 Fair. Which gives you time to hone your skills and enter one or more Open Show categories from growing to sewing to preserving and so much more. Volunteers will also be needed.

I love this Fair. Better known at my house as 'City Sue meets Country Sue.' I started going to the McHenry County Fair when my children were young. We would walk through the poultry, rabbit, swine, goat, dairy and beef barns. I was in awe of the parents and kids who spent five days and nights there showing a year's worth of work and having fun doing it.

Now I continue to attend, strolling every exhibit and building. Leading me first to enter the Open Flower Show and now to assist in organizing the event.

I admit, winning some Blue Ribbons hooked me on the Fair but it's the involved people of all ages: exhibitors, board members, Fair office workers, volunteers, 4H members, public service organizations and businesses that I am in awe of today. All sharing what they're good at so everyone can enjoy their day at the Fair.

People like Walter who judges feed hay by sight, smell and feel. A rare talent today. Infra-red machines do this now. Organizations like the McHenry County Conservation Districe, U of I Master Gardeners and McHenry County Department of Health helping and informing county residents of their programs. Businesses too, like Cabelas, encouraging 'catch and release' fishing with a bluegill stocked mini-pond, Countryside Flower Shop and Nursery designing a green oasis for relaxation in the Junior and Adult Open Flower Show building, and who can resist the mouth-watering Fair food!

Although the history of McHenry County's agricultural past is noticeable everywhere at the fairgrounds, the Fair is more than a celebration of the past. The McHenry County Fair is actually all about the future, with respect to the past, celebrating one Fair participant at a time.

Summer in flight! Don't miss the hummingbirds and all the beautiful songbirds this summer!

Stop in for Hummingbird Feeders, Tray Feeders, Squirrel Proof Feeders and over 17 varieties of seed to keep your feeders filled!

It is important for birds to have fresh water. Be sure to change your birdbath water often.

It is as important for them to have access to a dry bath. Many birds like to use, dry dirt areas to preen their feathers and keep themselves cool! You will also find that butterflies appreciate this type of 'bath' as well.

Stop in for your bird seed and check out the upcoming bird walk dates thru the McHenry County Audubon Society.

When you need a new patio, who you gonna call? Countryside!
