We are pleased to share with you the August 2016 newsletter of the Jewish Community Relations Council (JCRC) of the Jewish Federation of Greater Dallas, reporting on our programming and activities during the summer.
With the beginning of our new programming year, we are delighted to welcome new JCRC Chair, Melanie Rubin. Our thanks and best wishes to outgoing JCRC Chair A.J. Rosmarin, whose leadership and contributions to our work over the last three years was meaningful, substantive and greatly appreciated.

JCRC TO HOST BRIEFING ON POVERTY 
The JCRC will host a briefing for select Jewish community leadership about the importance of early childhood education as a means of alleviating multigenerational poverty in the greater Dallas area on Thursday, September 8, 11:30 am-1 pm at the Jewish Federation of Greater Dallas.
The program will focus on multigenerational poverty, of which Dallas leads in rates for cities with one million residents or above. The JCRC is promoting access to quality early childhood education as a solution that can make our city, and our Dallas Jewish community, stronger and more vibrant.
The program will feature remarks from Rabbi Michael Kushnick of Congregation Anshai Torah, JCRC Executive Committee Chair and Education Advocate Melanie Rubin, and Dr. Tim Bray, Director of Institute for Urban Policy Research at the University of Texas at Dallas. The event is a project of the JCRC Early Childhood Education Initiative, which seeks to engage the Jewish community as stakeholders and educate them about poverty in Dallas and an important solution that lies in high quality early childhood education.
A key goal of these efforts is to inform the Dallas Jewish Community about the importance of the earliest years and the short- and long-term impact high quality early education makes for all children in Dallas. The initiative will provide links to different types of opportunities.
Types of opportunities to make a difference on this important issue will include education, programming, community collaborations, direct service volunteer opportunities and policy.

JCRC HOSTS JEWISH-LATINO NETWORKING EVENT

JCRC Jewish-Latino Happy Hour at Nickel and Ry |
More than 50 leaders from both the Jewish and Latino communities in the greater Dallas area gathered for the Dallas JCRC's Jewish and Latino Networking Happy Hour on Thursday, July 21 at Nickel and Rye restaurant in Uptown.
The event was held to bring together emerging leadership from the Latino and Jewish communities. The program featured remarks from Mayor Pro Tem Monica Alonzo and Councilmember Philip Kingston. Discussion focused on the importance of the Jewish and Latino communities coming together to improve our community.
VIPs in attendance at the event included Consul General of Mexico Francisco de la Torre, Deputy Consul General of Mexico Victor Arriaga, Dallas County Commissioner Dr. Elba Garcia, former Dallas City Councilmember Delia Jasso, Justice of the Peace Juan Jasso, Dallas Municipal Judge Paula Rosales, Dallas Municipal Judge Dan Solis, Dallas County School Board Trustee Omar Narvaez and Dallas ISD Board Trustee Jaime Resendez.
The Dallas Jewish and Latino Coalition, an initiative of the JCRC, was created in 2015 to provide opportunities for cross-cultural education between the Jewish and Latino communities, to help develop leadership in both sectors, and to encourage awareness on a variety of social action initiatives. The group had previously met several times for community leadership meetings, including a luncheon at the Jewish Federation of Greater Dallas in August 2015.

JCRC SUPPORTS ANTI-BDS LEGISLATION EFFORTS 
The JCRC has been actively supporting efforts to pass potential anti-BDS legislation through the Texas state legislature during the upcoming spring 2017 session.
In meetings with several state representatives, as well as with the Governor's office, the JCRC has communicated support for anti-BDS legislation and has offered to serve as a resource to help ensure its passage. The Texas legislation is expected to affirm Texas' economic, business and cultural relationship
with Israel by prohibiting any corporation or organization participating in BDS from receiving state contracts.
The JCRC will again advocate for any anti-BDS legislation during their Texas Jewish Communities' Day at the State Legislative Mission to Austin next spring (as it did in March 2015), when Jewish communities from across the state convene for a day of advocacy and education at the Texas State Capitol in Austin.

JCRC CONTINUES TO FOCUS ON COMBATTING BDS
On Wednesday, June 1, the JCRC welcomed leadership from the Jewish Council for Public Affairs (JCPA), the JCRC's parent organization, to Dallas for a discussion on BDS, as part of the JCRC's work staffing the Dallas Federation's Combatting BDS initiative.
Cheryl Fishbein, new JCPA Executive Committee Chair, and David Bernstein, new JCPA President and CEO, attended a committee meeting of the Combatting BDS initiative and spoke on the topic of intersectionality and strategies for effective anti-BDS outreach and advocacy, particularly to other minority groups on campus and beyond.
The Federation's Combatting BDS initiative led by Hylton Jonas seeks to educate and inform our community about BDS and to serve as a resource to help our students in Texas and on campuses across the country feel confident about their Jewish and pro-Israel identity. Also as part of their visit, Ms. Fishbein and Mr. Bernstein had the opportunity to meet with Dallas Federation leaders and staff to discuss national strategy that will allow JCPA to serve as a greater resource to the Dallas JCRC and to our Dallas Jewish community.

JCRC JOINS COMMUNITY IN MOURNING FALLEN DALLAS OFFICERS 
On behalf of the Dallas Jewish community, the JCRC joined a diverse array of community leaders in mourning the four Dallas Police Department officers and one DART officer that were slain in downtown Dallas on Thursday, July 7.
JCRC staff attended an interfaith vigil hosted by the City of Dallas at Thanksgiving Square in downtown Dallas on Friday, July 8. Anita Zusman Eddy, JCRC Executive Director, provided remarks at another interfaith vigil hosted by Congregation Beth Torah in Richardson on Sunday, July 10.
JCRC staff connected with faith and civic leaders from the Black, Latino, Muslim and other communities iand sent a letter of condolence to Dallas Police Chief, David O. Brown in the aftermath of the shootings to show support from the Dallas Jewish community.
