Dear Friend of CCSD93,
Thank You, Mr. Sean McQuade!
At last night's Board of Education meeting, the Board members who were elected during the April 2, 2019 election were officially seated. As part of this process, we recognized outgoing Board member Sean McQuade who did not seek re-election after eight years on CCSD93's Board, the past four of which he has served as Board Vice President.

I thank Mr. McQuade for his service to CCSD93 and our community. In his role, he devoted hundreds, if not thousands, of uncompensated hours to contribute to governing CCSD93 effectively and responsibly with his fellow Board members.
Here are a few of Mr. McQuade's accomplishments during his tenure with the Board:
  • Faithfully attended Board meetings; I cannot recall him missing any of the 150-odd meetings held during his time on the Board.
  • Served on three formal bargaining teams.
  • Led the School Board on several occasions challenging federal and state legislators on legislative issues affecting public education.
  • Helped craft a letter to a federal legislator suggesting that the No Child Left Behind Act was ineffective and advocating for the Every Student Succeeds Act.
  • Completed more Illinois Association of School Board professional development than required, maintaining Master Board Member level.
  • Helped to design Board workshops and was active in designing the Board's self-evaluation tool.
  • Served on the Board's Finance Committee.
  • Was instrumental in moving CCSD93 to modernize its learning spaces.
Please join me in thanking Mr. McQuade for his incredible devotion to ensuring CCSD93 is the best school system possible for our community! Here he is pictured (3rd from the right) with CCSD93's Board and me (not pictured: Board member Terry Svoboda).

Welcome Back, Mr. Rogelio Orozco
While incumbent Board members Sonal Amin and President Keith Briggs were re-elected on April 2, Mr. Rogelio Orozco was elected via write-in to the third open seat. Mr. Orozco previously served on CCSD93's Board from June of 2015 until April of 2017, and we're grateful to welcome him back to the Board. Here he is with his family.
CCSD93 Middle Schoolers Collaborate with Local Manufacturers on Shark Tank Project
Eighth graders in Information & Media Literacy (IML) classes at Jay Stream and Stratford are working to create and market prototypes of useful inventions or products to peers, and eventually to real life entrepreneurs, during their Shark Tank project!

As the students develop their projects, they're collaborating with a real expert in the field, Prince Castle LLC's Engineering Manager Lizzie Bertness, who is pushing them to think critically about their products and embrace advanced design thinking concepts used in manufacturing.

On May 15, classroom winners will present their projects to local "Sharks" Steve Romanelli, President and COO of Core Pipe Products, and Steve Shei, Vice President of Strategy & Innovation at Prince Castle. The winning product will not only be crowned the first ever CCSD93 District-Wide Shark Tank Champion, but may also be fabricated by Prince Castle!
The IML students will field trip to Core Pipe and Prince Castle the following week to take in the full scope of the work done by these world class manufacturers that are located in their own community.

This engaging and relevant learning experience requires CCSD93 students to apply crucial 21st century skills like adaptability, entrepreneurship, communication, creativity, analyzation and curiosity. Find out more about our community partners and their roles in the Shark Tank by clicking on the image above for a video about the project! Special thanks to the Carol Stream Chamber for helping to coordinate the project.
Arbor Day Tree Planted with Village of Carol Stream at Roy DeShane
Today is Arbor Day, and to honor it, Roy DeShane School collaborated with the Village of Carol Stream to plant a ceremonial tree on the school's grounds near its playground today!

Roy DeShane student Golden Bone winners, along with Village Board members and Carol Stream Public Works officials, were on hand to help plant the swamp white oak tree, which is a native to Illinois. Golden Bone winners are selected each trimester by their teachers for exemplifying respectful, responsible, and safe behaviors.

Before the planting, Village Board member Rick Geiser spoke to students about the value of trees, and afterwards Village's resident arborist answered terrific questions from the students about how trees get their nutrients, damage insects can cause to trees, and how young trees are transported.

The students were thrilled to learn that the tree that they helped plant could grow to over 60 feet tall and live up to 300 years!
