June 13, 2019   Emmanuel's E-News
Greetings from
Emmanuel Episcopal Church!

This Sunday is Trinity Sunday: The First Sunday after Pentecost.

Trinity Sunday is one of the seven principal feasts of the church year. It celebrates the union for all time of God and God's people. It is the day when the fullness of God's presence in all aspects of the life of God's people is recognized and lifted up.

We look forward to seeing you in church!

The Season After Pentecost

The season after Pentecost, according to the calendar of the church year (BCP, p. 32), begins on the Monday following Pentecost, and continues through most of the summer and autumn. It may include as many as twenty-eight  Sunday s, depending on the date of Easter.

The Season after Pentecost begins with an observance of Trinity  Sunday  when we remember and honor the Triune God revealed to us in and through the life of the Resurrected Christ. On Trinity  Sunday,  white is the color of the day.

From Trinity Sunday on, the color will be green as we move into ordinary time and hear the lessons of Jesus' teachings and learn how to live the Christian life. The color for the season after Pentecost is green to symbolize the growth and life of the church. It is the longest season of the church year, from Trinity Sunday until the first Sunday of Advent.

DEWIVDAVID E. WEAVER IV MEMORIAL FUND

Traditionally, the open plate offering on a Sunday in June benefits the David E. Weaver IV Memorial Fund. This year that will be Sunday June 23rd as we remember the life and legacy of David.

For newer members of our church family,  David E. Weaver IV was the son of our former Rector David E. Weaver III and his wife Sally  who, along with his sister Rachel and her family, worship with us.  As his Dad was with us for 20 years, David grew up in our community. He was an amazing young man.  He passed away in 2003 and this Memorial Fund was established in his memory.

Emmanuel Garage Sale

The Emmanuel garage sale is planned for Friday, August 23rd Garage Saleand Saturday, August 24th.

We will be looking again for any donated items; if you have a neighbor who is moving - please pass on our information.

We do not want large sports equipment, adult clothes, or TVs, as they do not sell.

We are using the nursery for the first part of the summer to store any donations, except for children's toys, clothes and small sports equipment, which we ask that you take downstairs to the swamp. The nursery will not be in use for the summer.

We are looking forward to another successful sale this year, so please start saving items that you think will sell well. If you need help bringing large items or other donations to the church, please contact the office to arrange a pick up.

Thanks in advance for your donations!

Mission

Emmanuel is sending 20 people to St. Timothy's Episcopal Outreach Center in Irvine, Kentucky from July 7th to July 13th.  We will be doing construction work such as repairing a roof, replacing a floor, doing electrical work or digging a waterline so that a family will not have to carry water for drinking, doing dishes and bathing.  We have 11 adults and 9 youth attending the trip.

Car Wash!
There will be a car wash fundraiser for the trip on Sunday, June 23rd during both services. Donations for the cost of the trip (we pay for all the building supplies as part of the cost) are gladly accepted.

SAINT OF THE WEEK Antony of Padua, Preacher

13 June 1231

St. Anthony of Padua
Antony was born in Lisbon in 1195, and spent the first twenty-five years of his life in Portugal. Desiring to become a missionary, he joined the Franciscans and was sent to Morocco to preach to the Muslims. His health failed, and he returned almost immediately and was sent to Italy, where he seemed headed for an uneventful obscurity. However, a conference of Dominicans and Franciscans was scheduled, at which each group thought that the other was about to provide the preacher, and so no one was prepared.

For some reason, Antony was thrust forward and told to say something, and he astonished his hearers with the grace and power of his exhortation. He was told that he must speak more often, and he devoted the last nine years of his life to preaching. He had a thorough knowledge of the Scriptures, and his sermons reflect that knowledge. He was noted for his refutations of heresies, and for his denunciations of clergy who did not live dedicated lives and of wealthy and powerful persons who oppressed the common people.

It is said that Antony in his private prayers was accustomed to direct his devotion to Jesus as an infant, and to meditate on the Divine Humility that stooped to accept, not merely the limitations of being human, but the limitations of being a helpless baby, utterly dependent on others. For this reason, artists often portray Antony in a Franciscan robe, carrying a lily and the child Jesus.

Background Note:  In many countries, it is widely believed that Antony, now in heaven, makes a special point of praying on behalf of women who wish to marry. The book My Heart Lies South, by Elizabeth Borton de Trevino who lived in Mexico, tells of a friend of hers there who repeatedly asked Antony to pray for her that she might find a suitable man to marry. After a considerable time with no results, she became discouraged and in a fit of temper threw her statue of Antony out the window. It fell to the sidewalk below, hit a pedestrian on the head, and knocked him out cold. Other pedestrians at once came to his aid, carried him into the nearest house (her parents' house, of course), and laid him on the couch before sending someone for the doctor. He awoke to find the girl fanning him and putting cold cloths on his brow. Soon they were betrothed, and then they got married and lived happily ever after.

Take that, you skeptics!

Time to replace your worn out flag?

Summer is coming and Memorial Day is almost upon us. It's time to retire your tattered, torn, and worn American and POW-MIAflags and replace them with a new one. But just not
sure how to retire them properly?

Well, we can help with that. Just deposit your old flags (large or small) into the box located in the breezeway, and let Boy Scout Troop 111 and VFW Post 2868 take care of the retirement. Flags will be accepted until June 14th which is Flag Day.

Please, no holiday or sports team flags (especially White Sox flags).
