Please help FAMILY 2 FAMILY plan for the Holiday Season
Dear Parishioners:

Through the generous participation from our parish for over 15+ years, the Family to Family Program has helped many families from St. Lawrence of Brindisi, our sister parish in Watts, celebrate the Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays.

So much has changed this year, but with your participation, we are hoping we can still help these families in need. We will not be able to participate in a gift drop-off this year and will not have specific St. Lawrence families to assign. We feel the best way to proceed is to provide scrip/gift cards for Christmas. That way, families could shop for their holiday meals and purchase gifts for their children.

Please click the survey link below and answer 3 questions to let us know you would participate in supporting the families at St. Lawrence by donating scrip/gift cards that will go directly to St. Lawrence, for the families based on need.

God bless, we look forward to hearing and seeing you all soon.
Michele and Kurt Neesley, and Pam McCarthy

STEWARDSHIP - Moving Us Closer to God
The following story was shared on social media about the time the world realized that we were experiencing a pandemic.

“Years ago, the well-known anthropologist Margaret Mead was asked by a student what she considered to be the first sign of civilization in a culture. The student expected Mead to talk about fish hooks or clay pots or grinding stones. But no. Mead said that the first sign of civilization in an ancient culture was a thighbone that had been broken and then healed. Mead explained that in the animal kingdom, if you break your leg, you die. You cannot run from danger, get to the river for a drink or hunt for food. No animal survives a broken leg long enough for the bone to heal. A broken femur that has healed is evidence that someone had taken time to stay with the one who fell, had bound up the wound, carried the person to safety and tended to the person through recovery. Helping someone else through difficulty is where civilization starts.”

One thing this virus has reinforced in me is that we are all connected to and reliant on our various communities including our family, our neighborhood, or our Church. Personally, I don’t think I could get through this without my spouse and telephone conversations with our children and grandchildren. Our parish is another important community in our lives. Getting involved in outreach gets our minds off of our own situation, and Sunday Mass is a reminder of what is really important to us.

We are programmed for kindness and co-operation above all else. It’s how we have evolved, by working in co-operative groups and supporting each other. We are also the descendants of those people who cared for others while their bones healed. Margaret Mead said “Helping someone else through difficulty is where civilization starts.” And continued with, “Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world.”

Today’s readings call us to look inward to the state of our hearts. To examine those aspects of ourselves that cannot be quantified or measured, but which are the deepest part of us; our thoughts and emotions. Let’s look inward and see where we are in helping our civilization to continue.

STEPHEN MINISTRY - Confidential Care and Support
Do you feel lost? Would you like to be found?

In the eyes of God we are worth searching for. We might feel lost, but God wants to find every lost sheep and lost coin. He wants us to stop feeling dead, and to feel alive again. God wants us to know how loved and valued we are.

But when we’re experiencing a financial crisis, family problems, job challenges, health issues, or any crisis at all, we need someone to help us to feel that love. A Stephen Minister can be your confidential partner when times are tough.

If you need someone to talk to, leave a message on our confidential Stephen Ministry phone line, 310-545-8244. Deacon Dick and Patti Williams will meet with you to explore whether a Stephen Minister may be a good fit for you.
EARTH CARE MINISTRY
FAITH FORMATION
BECOMING CATHOLIC - RCIA
Adults considering entering the Catholic Church follow a process known as the RCIA - the Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults

Are You Someone, or Do You Know Someone Who…
  • Has expressed an interest in becoming Catholic?
  • Was baptized Catholic as a child, but has not celebrated the Sacraments of Confirmation and Eucharist?

RCIA sessions begins this Wednesday, September 16
 at Families in Faith.

First Graders not attending Catholic School may begin the two year process
to First Communion through our SRE program.

All SRE students must register this year, whether new or returning.
High School Confirmation registration is also available online at SEALED.
American Martyrs Sunday Preschool program is the second step of your child’s faith formation; home and family being the first.

It is the ideal setting for our parish preschoolers to discover God's message of love and hope and is designed to awaken their sense of wonder and appreciation of the many gifts from our Creator.

Sunday Preschool will look different this year. We will mail “Sunday Preschool in a Box” home to families that register! ‘Boxes’ will be mailed once a month and will include a simple preprinted lesson and craft that is age appropriate.

Tuesday Morning Scripture Study

We begin the 2020-21 year this week, on Tuesday, September 15, using ZOOM, with the study of Hebrews: The New and Eternal Covenant, an 8-week program that takes Christians on a guided tour of what is considered the “Holy of Holies” of biblical theology.

You can still register by emailing your name to alvinjerry@hotmail.com with a note committing to mail a check for $26.95 (payable to American Martyrs) to Alvin Fletcher (1545 Curtis Ave, Manhattan Beach, CA 90266).
Class members will receive a ZOOM invitation for each on-line class.
