PASTOR DEB VACATION
Pastor Deb is on vacation April 23 - 30th. Rev. Joyce Snapp is on emergency pastoral call.  Rev. Don Sperber will be preaching April 28th.

GUEST PASTOR REV. DON SPERBER BIO
I am a Retired Elder in the Mountain Sky Conference of the United Methodist Church. I retired as the pastor of Grace United Methodist in Denver on July 1, 2003. Following my retirement, I trained to serve as a Transitional Intentional Interim Pastor and am a United Methodist Education Association Approved Intentional Interim. Following that training, I have served as the Intentional Interim at six different locations in length of 2 months to a year in duration, depending on the needed time for transitioning the specific congregation.

In 1980 my wife, Audrey passed away while I was serving as pastor at the United Methodist Church of Evergreen.  Linda and I were married in 1983. Currently, we live in Lakewood, CO.  We have lived in Lakewood for the last 21 years.

Linda and I met after Audrey's death.  Linda serves as a Spiritual Director. When Linda and I were married we brought together our 5 children. Three live in the Denver Metro Area, one lives in Salida, CO the other, Judi the oldest lives in Bethesda, Maryland.  We are fortunate to be called grandparents to 8.  The oldest is 21, and the youngest is 8.

NATIVE AMERICAN MINISTRIES
Sunday, May 5th

Each year on the first Sunday of May we lift up our UM Native American Ministries in worship and through our special communion offering. We have more than 20,000 Native Americans who are part of the United Methodist Church. This year's featured ministry is our own Blackfoot Parish in Browning, Montana. Pastor Deb has been a partner in this ministry - assisting in bringing the pastor featured as well as working with the lay training program also featured. Our offering goes toward Native American ministry programs as well as offering scholarships for Native American students.

UMM MOTHER'S DAY SERVICE
Sunday, May 12th at 10:30 am

Last year's Mother's Day Service featured the inaugural performance of the locally renowned United Methodist Men's Chorus. Due to the incredible demand for a repeat performance, the group will take center stage again for Mother's Day this year. In addition, UMM will honor the ladies of UMCE by handling all aspects of the 10:30 worship service, including giving Pastor Deb the day off. Please join us - we promise to get you out on time (if not sooner) for your Mother's Day lunch.

SUMMER HOUSING NEEDED FOR
VISITING COLLEGE STUDENT
My name is Jimmy Conway and I am a fellow Methodist coming from the Midwest out to Colorado for the summer. I will be working with a conservation company, TEENSinc., and my position will be stationed out of Conifer. I am reaching out to see if there would be anyone willing to rent me a room in their home for the summer.

I'll be working for TEENSinc. all day Monday through Thursdays from May 28th - August 15th. I would be looking to stay with someone from June 4th - August 15th. If someone would be willing to open up their home for me for only part of the time that would be okay and we could work together further to figure something out.

Also, I am pretty flexible with whatever arrangement pans out.  I would gladly respect someone's family time and remain fairly independent or would happily join in for some lively conversations. Please tell anyone interested that they are more than welcome to reach out to me  via email at [email protected] or by phone at 608-636-3341).

Recommendation letter from his pastor is below:

To whom it may concern:

I am happy to write this letter of recommendation for Jimmy Conway. Jimmy and his family are long time members of Mount Horeb United Methodist Church. They are active members who are involved not only in the church but in the community.

I am proud of the work Jimmy is doing in Colorado this summer. If someone from your congregation is able to help him with housing I think they will be blessed. I would trust Jimmy in my house with my family and have no hesitation recommending him to you. Please don't hesitate to contact me if you have further questions.

MISSIONS CLOTHING DRIVE FOR THE TENNYSON
CENTER FOR CHILDREN
Sunday, April 28th before and after services

Tennyson Center for Children is a residential treatment center and K-12 school for emotionally and crisis-affected children and youth, particularly those who have suffered from abuse and neglect. It serves children ranging in age from 5-18 and states as its mission: "We are dedicated to ensuring that these amazing kids have the fighting chance they deserve at a satisfying and fulfilling life."  Many children come to Tennyson Center wearing clothes that are torn, tattered and one or two sizes too small.  To ensure that every child has clothes that fit, Tennyson Center accepts donations of new clothing in its Dress a Child program.

Our shopping expert, Katie Zapotoczny, will purchase a variety of new clothing for this drive (used clothing is not accepted).  You can support this program by donating to cover the cost of these clothes purchased for the Tennyson Center's resident children. The clothes that Missions has purchased will be displayed and available for "sponsorship" on April 28th in the Fellowship Hall, before and after services.  Please consider supporting this effort!  Questions?  Call Bill Graf 303-246-8330 or email [email protected].

MINISTRY JOTTINGS BY PASTOR DEB

Pastor's Jottings:   Guest Contributor Rev. Joyce Snapp

The post-resurrection stories of Jesus excite me.  Our lectionary gospel scripture this week is John 20: 19-31. This is the story of the terrified disciples locking themselves in the Upper Room, barring the doors against the Jews.  Jesus simply and boldly comes through those locked doors and says, "Peace be with you."

While I sat in our sanctuary this past Easter morning enjoying the celebration music, the Easter garden, the scripture, and Pastor Deb's message I couldn't help thinking about the agony of the Sri Lankan Christians during their Easter services. There they were, enjoying the best of Easter Sunday worship, while we were yet asleep.  Their reverence was smashed open as bombs exploded, ceilings and walls caved in on the prayerful worshippers.   I suppose even flames of fire dropped here and there as children, mothers and fathers, brothers and sisters, cousins, aunts and uncles were burned and trapped by the debris.

Imagine Jesus breaking through the terror there, and saying Peace be with you.  As the Father has sent me, so I send you.  What does Jesus send them to do?  Does Jesus send us, too, to study and understand the conflict that brings the Sri Lankan Christians so much tragedy?  Does Jesus breathe the Holy Spirit on us, too, that we might walk and pray in solidarity with them as they rise from the suffering?

Peace be with us.  Awareness and strength be with us.  The love of Christ be with us. We rise with Christ.
