Ft. Lauderdale Based Hospital Addresses COVID Related Challenges with Changes
Holy Cross Hospital recently announced that it will adjust staffing levels and other direct expenses to address decreased revenues caused by the COVID-19 pandemic and to ensure that the health system can serve its communities in the long term.

"Our mission is to be a transforming and healing presence in our communities, and we are making painful but necessary decisions to ensure that we can sustain our organization into the future," said Mark Doyle, Holy Cross Hospital president and chief executive officer. "Like most health systems and other industries across the country, we are facing significant pandemic-related challenges. As we ramped up to support inpatients afflicted with COVID-19 and effectively shut down outpatient and elective services during stay-at-home orders, our revenues fell and operational costs increased."

Pulmonary Hypertension Program Earns National Accreditation
By delivering comprehensive, expert care to patients with a life-threatening disease, the University of Miami Health System and Jackson Memorial Hospital now offer the first accredited Pulmonary Hypertension Care Center program in South Florida.

"This is a major accomplishment for the Miller School of Medicine's Divisions of Pulmonary, Cardiology and Critical Care," said David J. De La Zerda, MD, assistant professor of medicine, fellowship program director, and director of pulmonary/critical care. "It reflects our team's ability to diagnose and treat this rare lung condition, including medical therapies, clinical trials and transplant procedures."

In June, the national Pulmonary Hypertension Association (PHA) awarded accreditation to the Pulmonary Hypertension Program, which provides clinical services at UHealth Tower, the Diabetes Research Institute, The Lennar Foundation Medical Center, The Miami Transplant Institute, Jackson Ambulatory Care Center, and Jackson Multispecialty Center.

Jorge J. GarcĂa, PharmD, MS, MHA, MBA, FACHE, is a strong believer in lifelong learning and the value of continuing education. Since coming to the U.S. from Cuba at the age of 15, he has made it his goal to become a leader in the field of healthcare, and today he is a sought-after expert in the field of pharmacy charge integrity and revenue management in the health system setting, as well as in the areas of alternative payment models, biosimilars, and value-based oncology care.

As the assistant vice president, System Oncology Pharmacy Service Line at Baptist Health South Florida, Dr. Garcia is responsible for all inpatient and outpatient oncology pharmacy services throughout the healthcare system. This includes facilities in the Florida Keys, Miami-Dade County, Broward County, and now Palm Beach County with Baptist's acquisition of Boca Raton Regional Hospital.

Prior to taking this position, he served as the director of pharmacy for Memorial Healthcare System's Cancer Institute for four years, and as the operations coordinator at Broward Health Medical Center.

"My role at Baptist is to ensure that we practice in an evidence-based manner, and remain at the forefront of providing quality treatments to our patients," he said. "I also play a major role in making sure that research is available to patients; in oncology, sometimes treatments are not successful, and we offer alternative treatments under investigation at the Miami Cancer Institute, where I spend most of my time."
