HEB ISD Students Featured in Movie
12 MIGHTY ORPHANS tells the true story of the Mighty Mites, the football team of a Fort Worth orphanage who, during the Great Depression, went from playing without shoes—or even a football—to playing for the Texas state championships.

Over the course of their winning season these underdogs and their resilient spirit became an inspiration to their city, state, and an entire nation in need of a rebound, even catching the attention of President Franklin D. Roosevelt.

Donna Park students Josie and Lillie (twins) appear as characters in the movie. The parents of the actors are both music teachers in HEB ISD – Taunk Fink at Donna Park, and Nathan Fink at Midway Park. Their oldest daughter Tomzie was also an extra in the film.

"Yes! Your Child Can Go to College!"
What a powerfully positive message! This comes from our wonderful counselor at Shady Oaks Elementary, Helen Schlee. Earlier this month, she sponsored a parent workshop in honor of College Week.

"Helen Schlee, Counselor at Shady Oaks, encourages all students in all grades to consider college for their future. Often the idea of college can be scary – especially when considering the cost, application process, etc.," said Carla Docken, Coordinator of Guidance and Counseling. "By hosting this event for parents, Shady Oaks starts early with the message that ALL students can go to college! I appreciate Mrs. Schlee’s vision for the students and families at Shady Oaks!"

The presentation was given by Tarrant County College and there were lots of parents in attendance.
The event focused on how students can truly begin preparing for college now, by making good choices, getting good grades, and saving money.

There were also lessons about financial aid, requirements to enter TCC and other universities, and a lot more valuable information for parents and students. It's never too early to begin planning for the future!

Special thanks to TCC, Shady Oaks, Helen Schlee, and all who made this event possible!
