A MESSAGE FROM THE RABBI
|
On the second night of Passover we had our annual community Seder. We were more than 60 people (Grandparents, parents, grandchildren, siblings, friends, and guests) gathered together to continue the tradition of commemorating our redemption. The Torah records that the very first Seder was on the evening before our ancestors left Egypt. Every year since, Jewish people around the world have had Seders.
At our community Seder we performed the traditional rituals of Pesach, Matzah, and Marror; we told the Passover story and we blessed, and ate, both unleavened bread and bitter herbs. We also, sang, laughed, and performed a play about the Exodus story. And, of course, we ate and drank four cups of wine. We even had a visit from Elijah the Prophet who seemed like a really nice guy.
A highlight of this year's Seder was when 14 people (young and old) volunteered to perform in a play about the Exodus story. Each participant gave a performance worthy of a Tony nomination as I, conjuring my inner Phil Donahue, ran from actor to actor with the microphone.
If you have not been to our JCC Seder, consider joining us next year!
As I am writing this, today is the fourth day of the counting of the Omer. It marks the time between the festival of Passover, the holiday of redemption and freedom, until the festival of Shavuot; the holiday where a free people accepts Torah, which gives just and righteous laws that a free people should live by. We count daily for 49 days from the second night of Passover.
I teach this counting as, not a "count-down", but as a "count-up" to holiness. By counting each day, we become present to the daily need to improve ourselves. For those who don't need improving, the time can be used to recognize small daily things we can do to improve the world around us. Each evening try to set aside a few minutes to do this.
If you have not counted the Omer and would like to start, reach out to me. It is easy!
This Friday and Saturday morning we will be having Passover services at the JCC beginning at 9:30 am.
Importantly, on Saturday, at approximately 11:00 am, we will chant our Yizkor service. Yizkor provides us with the unique opportunity to remember our loved ones who are no longer physically with us. By saying our personal prayers while standing with our community we acknowledge the importance of being part of a continuing family unit while we are, at the same time, shrouded in the warmth of a communal blanket that provides us with comfort and strength. Our community is an amalgam of families; we are separate units sharing important pieces of our lives. Join us. I look forward to spending sacred time with you.
Shabbat Shalom and Chag Sameach - Rabbi Michael S. Jay

PASSOVER AT THE JCC OF LBI.....
Thanks to so many people for helping to make a wonderful holiday here at the JCC with a special thanks to Rabbi Jay and Irene & Mike Babst who led the way.
In spite of making their own holiday preparations, we thank those who came into the kitchen to kasher it for Passover and to those who helped set up for the Community Seder and lent a hand that evening.
Our Passover shretls (elves) were:
our leader Irene Babst, Diane Buskirk, Noralyn Carroll, Patty Block, Debra Falek, Suzie Geier, Jennifer Millner, Sheri Jay, Sylvia Horowitz, Kayla Lombardi, Ina & Ira Morgenthal (our shoppers), Michael Babst (who made a delicious kugel), Howard Fruchterman & Sherry Fruchterman, and of course our Rabbi. JOB WELL DONE!!!!

IT'S SPRING !!!!!

|
Planting bulbs November 2018
|
Last November at the suggestion of members Noralyn & David, Carroll, 125 daffodil bulbs were planted around the JCC building in response to a
Am Yisrael Chai (a non profit Holocaust Education and Awareness Organization) initiative to plant 1.5 million daffodils around the world in memory of the 1.5 million children who perished in the Holocaust and in support for children suffering in humanitarian crises in the world today.
The shape and color of the daffodils represent the Yellow stars that Jews were forced to wear during the Holocaust. Yellow is the color of remembrance. Daffodils represent our poignant hope for the future. They are resilient and return with a burst of color each Spring, signifying hope, renewal and beauty. The daffodils also honor those who survived the Holocaust and went on to build new lives after this dark and difficult period.
Thank you to our bulb planters: Irene Babst, Michael Babst, Noralyn Carroll, David Carroll, Howard Fruchterman, Rose Valentine, Sheri Jay and Rabbi Jay.
