The Office of Family and Community Engagement would like to thank each and every one of our families, community members, principals, staff, and students for an amazing 2017-2018 school year. This year saw growth in family engagement, the further development of School Advisory Councils in schools, the birth of the FACE Office's adult education series Family Academy: Courses and Training, and an abundance of amazing family and community events at many of our schools. We hope you all have an educational, safe, and, fun summer break.

We'll see you in August! In the meantime, read on for amazing stories, end of year recaps, and summer opportunities!

FAMILY SPOTLIGHT
2nd Annual Northeast Reading Family Extravaganza Fosters a Love of Reading in Children
The event, held on May 17, welcomed over 350 families from across Northeast Philadelphia and was an opportunity for staff, students, volunteers, and families to come together to encourage a love of reading. 
Richard Wright Welcomes Dads!
On June 1, 2018 Richard R. Wright School in North Philadelphia hosted a Donuts for Dads event which welcomed over 25 men to the school. Mr. Dorian Harris, Family Engagement Liaison, presented on SLAM: Summer Learning and More, where fathers read with their children and play educational games to keep learning alive during the summer months!

After the Storm: A Father and Son Rebuild in Philadelphia
In late September of last year, Hurricane Maria ripped through Puerto Rico. Thousands of people were displaced, and two of these people were musician Raúl Berrios and his son Asaf, who relocated to Philadelphia and are now building their lives here.

Harding Hosts Two Community Engagement Events in Two Weeks
Although the school year is coming to an end, Harding Middle School is showing no signs of slowing down. They hosted two back-to-back events for students and community members this spring, a Career Day for sixth and seventh graders, and a school-wide Community Health Day.

Congratulations to the Volunteer of the Year and FACT Award Winners!
The FACE Office held an awards ceremony before the End-of-Year Family Celebration on June 1 to honor the person who attended the most Family Academy: Courses and Training (FACT) courses and two all star volunteers who have contributed so much to their school community!
REMINDER FOR STUDENTS AND FAMILIES!
School begins before Labor Day this year . Mark your calendars for the first day of school on Monday, August 27th, 2018!

Also new this year, ALL GRADES , including PreK and Kindergarten, start at the same time. All students, in all grades, will report to school on Monday August 27th."
The Deadline to Complete the District-Wide Parent & Guardian Survey has Been Extended!
Have YOU taken the District-Wide Parent & Guardian Survey yet? It's available to complete online in 8 languages until June 15th, 2018 . All you need is your student's School District of Philadelphia ID to complete it!
As of Friday, June 1, 30,015  parents/guardians have already completed the survey - thank you! A  shout out  to  A.S. Jenks Elementary School,  where 66% of their parents/guardians have already taken the survey!
Here are the TOP TEN schools in the District who are leading in survey completion:

Calling all Pre-K Parents & Guardians!
Does your child attend a Head Start, Bright Futures, or other community-based pre-kindergarten center? We want to hear from you! Don't miss your chance to take the 2018 Pre-Kindergarten Parent Survey. We want to hear from you about your child's pre-k center, as well as your plans for Kindergarten. The survey is open until  June 23rd . You will need your child's COPA ID number to take the survey, which your child's teachers should be able to give you.

UPCOMING EVENTS & OPPORTUNITIES
Calling all teen volunteers!
Did you know that teens are twice as likely to volunteer as adults? It can be hard, however, for them to find opportunities when the school year is over. The City of Philadelphia's Office of Civic Engagement & Volunteer Service is looking to change that with the launch of the Summer of Service campaign, which seeks to pair teens with meaningful, impactful, and accessible service opportunities this summer.
Assistance Available for Those Recovering from Hurricanes
Southeastern Pennsylvania Voluntary Organizations Active in Disasters is working with FEMA and the Greater Philadelphia Long Term Recovery Committee to find as many people as possible who’ve relocated to Pennsylvania from Puerto Rico, the U.S. Virgin Islands, and Florida in the wake of the hurricanes.

Franklin Institute to Host Next Community Night June 19!
Visit the Franklin Institute for FREE on select nights this summer! The next Community Night will be held Tuesday, June 19 from 5pm-8pm. Enjoy hands-on science experiments and entrance to all permanent exhibits. Discounted parking is also available!
