Words from Will...Annual Conference 2019
|
|
It’s A Rap...or was it a line-dance, which the youth delegates led? We would have joined them but David didn’t want to do it (I know, sure!). There were lots of celebrations of progress on the Wildly Important Goal, our major growth initiative in the Central Texas Conference. We have returned with posters made from photographs of our LifeGroups, our Fall Festival and Financial Peace University, as well as a new banner recognizing First Church Round Rock as a Five-Star Mission Church.
But two greater celebrations carried the Conference. First was ordination, which included the ordination of Tommy Prud’homme as an Elder. It’s been a long journey and many of you have been part of it. There was also a hint of ministry developments to come as we were led by three young adult ministry interns, including our own Ryan McCord.
The second celebration came just after a break on Tuesday morning. The offering for Annual Conference services was for Mooreville United Methodist Church, whose sanctuary burned to the ground. There were many churches like ours that sent gifts in the first wave. But now the Conference was joining in. The Sunday night service offering netted just short of $10,000. But then on Tuesday, the miracle hit. First UMC, Waco stood up and pledged $5,000, which was followed by 30 solid minutes of churches making their commitments at all different levels. By the end of Conference, the total pledged at Conference was more than $190,000. Insurance covered about $600,000, while reconstruction will cost between $800,000 and $1,000,000. On Wednesday afternoon, the pastor, Dennis Rejeck and 30 members of the church came to express their appreciation as we stood to applaud them. We certainly can add to the $2,670 we have done, so if you would like to participate just
give here at the Church and note it for Mooreville.
Yes, there were motions and debates and General and Jurisdictional Conference delegates elected. No doubt, the 2020 General Conference (where more developments will happen around sexuality) and Jurisdictional Conference (where a new bishop will be elected for our Conference) will be interesting. But the most exciting thing was watching God move through our people and Churches. Special thanks to
Rich Thompson, Bill Canet, Paula Homes, Rev. John Clifford, Rev. David Johnson, and Rev. Pat McCain, who served with me on the delegation. We are proud to return for what we believe will be a year of ministry to remember and celebrate at First UMC of Greater Round Rock.
