ELCA Business Office is Relocating

The ELCA Business Office will be relocating to the main building
as of Wednesday, May 1.
Parents and visitors wishing to visit the business office may enter through the main entrance and check in with Mrs. Vicki during the school day. Between 3:30PM and 4:00PM, please enter via the north portico (After-School entrance). The business offices will be located in the same hallway as the elementary offices...near the elementary library.

Congratulations to senior Aliya Elmore on her acceptance to University of Pennsylvania, one of the 8 Ivy League schools. Mr. Teague, ELCA's Director of College Placement and Guidance, reflected that Aliya's outstanding writing in her college essays made her stand out as an exceptional student. Some of her accomplishments include being a 2018 Finalist for the Governor's Honors Program in Social Studies, Inaugural Executive Board Member for Diversity Council, and President of Beta Club. Out of 44,960 applicants, she was one of 3,345 students accepted for the Class of 2023. ELCA is very proud of her academic achievements and for having a strong foundation in her identity in Christ.

Forty-eight high school students visited the
National Center for Civil and Human Rights
on a field trip hosted by the Diversity Council. It was an eye-opening experience to gain greater knowledge of the American Civil Rights Movement and Global Human Rights, learning about the March on Washington and how each of us play a role to make a difference in society.
Third graders visited
The King Center
in Atlanta, Georgia, to learn more about Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s legacy beyond their knowledge from history class. Students had a chance to visit Dr. King's birthplace and where he lived for the first twelve years of his life. They enjoyed learning how he was a global leader promoting nonviolence through his sermons, speeches, and values.

Using Her Talents to Benefit Others
|
|
Sophomore Haleigh Howard auditioned to sing at the Beloved Benefit Concert held at the Mercedes-Benz Stadium. She had the opportunity to sing in front of celebrities like Bruno Mars, leaders, and professionals who raised $5 million dollars to benefit Atlanta's Westside neighborhoods. Haleigh also had a chance to share her gift of singing at an event supporting Habitat for Humanity with this choral group.

In March, ELCA Junior Ashlyn Donaldson competed in the 4-H Northwest Junior/Senior District Project Achievement. She was one of sixteen 4-H members from Henry County who competed against 37 other counties. There were 600 competing students in total.
These young people were given the opportunity to select a project area or category of their choice including Health, Science of Engineering & Mechanics, Food Labs, Performing Arts and more. Each member was judged on a year-long portfolio displaying all of their work in their project area, as well as school, community service and leadership activities they have completed over the past year. Ashlyn created a presentation using visual aids and presented a speech on Forestry and Wood Science.
The score from her presentation was combined with the score she received on her portfolio which was submitted in January for prior judging. Only those who placed 1
st
at the District Project Achievement will advance on to State Congress in July. We are very proud to announce that Ashlyn Donaldson will be one who will be advancing on to State Congress in July.

ELCA student and Eagle Scout Kris Assing collected almost 200 books from several wonderful community donors from our local neighborhoods. He dropped these off by his doctor’s office. Dr. Mauer of "The Kid’s Specialist” in Stockbridge has a library within her pediatrician’s practice which is a national “Reach out and Read” facility. Her young patients are encouraged to take home books to read. “To whom much is given....much is expected.”

Congratulations to ELCA Junior Declan Kilduff for earning the rank of Eagle Scout, the highest achievement in the Boy Scouts of America. Since its inception in 1911, only 4% of scouts have earned this rank.

Ashton Schuerman (8th grade) has fused his love of music with his technological skills and built a working guitar amplifier "I have built a Marshall amp clone, designed to replicate the sound of their first ever amp. I had to do continuous research to understand how every part of the amp worked. After about 40 hours of soldering, wire stripping, cutting and screwing, I had myself a working amp. I love this amp and I use it for everything that I do."

Charger Store Ribbon Cutting

The Charger Store celebrated its grand reopening with a Ribbon Cutting Ceremony on March 18. We are thrilled to have the school store in the new main foyer. Stop by and visit soon if you haven't had a chance yet!

Students in Mrs. Loach's 1st grade class have been fervently praying for Deputy Sid Callaway who was shot in the line of duty in February of 2018. The deputy was in critical condition and has endured a long road to recovery. However, he was willing to come to ELCA to speak to the students who have been encouraging him through prayer and notes this year. Deputy Callaway's story is one of bravery, service and faith. Middle School on the Road

graders traveled to the Ark Encounter, the Creation Museum, and Ruby Falls just before Spring break. This trip was a fantastic way for them to see many things they’ve learned about throughout the year In Bible class and in Earth Science. Additionally, it was a whole lot of fun!

ELCA 8
th
graders traveled to Washington D.C. the week before spring break. They enjoyed a very full schedule and were able to tour many national landmarks, museums, and historic sites while making great memories with their classmates. This annual trip is an ELCA tradition that is a highlight of the middle school years for many of our students!

Science and Engineering Fair Honors
|
|
Abigail Yemisrach and Dhruti Trivedi represented ELCA at the Henry County Science and Engineering Fair in mid-January. Abigail’s project, “Spaced Retrieval on Young Children” dealt with teaching the skill of hand-washing to young children and testing if they could repeat that skill correctly over time. Her project was entered into the Behavioral and Social Sciences category. Dhruti’s project, “The Function of Whey Protein on Crickets” dealt with testing the speed of crickets after adding whey protein to their diet. Her project was entered into the Cellular and Molecular Biology category. Both projects received rave reviews and first place prizes in their fields of study.
Abigail was further chosen to represent ELCA and Henry County at the Georgia Science and Engineering Fair that took place March 29th in Athens, Georgia. The awards ceremony was televised on GPB, and Abigail made contacts at both the CDC and Augusta State University which will lead to mentorships. She was presented the following awards:
-First Honors in the Behavioral and Social Science Category
-The Augusta University Award
-UGA Center for Continuing Education

award ($1000 -$3000 toward college tuition)
Both these ladies began their projects in the spring of the last school year and received mentors through Project Dream (Demystifying Research and Engaging Mentors in Science). Project Dream coordinated on-line learning sessions to discuss project topics, research skills, documentation and resources. This process will be available to all ELCA science students who would like to start a science fair project for next year’s science fair. We hope the success of both Abigail and Dhruti will inspire a new generation of scientists at ELCA.

Eleven ELCA students participated in the FLAG Spoken Language Contest at McEachern High School in March. Their interviews were conducted completely in Spanish and students were given a score based on their ability to communicate in Spanish. All 11 ELCA students received awards.

ELCA Art Gallery Show at
Hood Street Art Gallery

ELCA artists were featured at a Gallery Art Show at the Gallery at Hood Street on Friday, April 12. This was a great opportunity for our students to have the privilege of sharing their works with the community.

ELCA students traveled to Bethlehem, GA in March to compete at the ACSI Art Festival. There were many impressive works of art (which were displayed at the recent Art Gallery Show in McDonough) however, two ELCA students walked away with "Best In Show" honors. Carson Schuerman (6th grade)won the middle school division and Sadye Tyler (3rd grade) won the elementary division with their outstanding works! Congratulations!

The ELCA Chargers Varsity Football Team received their 2018 Football State Championship rings at the Champions Dinner on Monday, April 15. However, it's another level of awesome when you're receiving your FOURTH state championship ring! These seniors have experienced a bounty of victories on the field but most will tell you that they gained so much more than a string of wins from their experience as an ELCA Charger. Coach Gess and the coaching staff have hearts to mold boys into men of God with Christ-like character. Each young man will certainly be able look back on this phase of their life and recognize this is where they learned to give perfect effort into those things that matter. We pray they take the truths that have been held out to them and light their world wherever their paths take them.

Congratulations to senior Jack Buckley, who has been named the
Most Positive Football Athlete in South Atlanta
!
Over 5,400 student-athletes and coaches from over 415 high schools were nominated for honors this year, and only about 7% of those nominees will be recognized as a regional winner. He is the best of the best!
As a regional award winner, he is also eligible for a state-wide award and college scholarship.
These state-wide award winners
will be announced in early May, and will be invited to attend the 2019 Georgia Positive Athlete Awards on Tuesday, June 4
th
.
Jack has also been identified as a
Finalist
for the Eagle's Landing Family Practice "Family Values Award". This is a $1,000 scholarship that will be awarded to one of the Positive Athlete nominees in your region within the next few weeks.

ELCA Athletics is proud to announce that we have once again partnered with Eagle's Landing Family Practice to offer on-campus athletic physicals on May 1st, 2019 from 3-5pm. All middle school and high school athletes are encouraged to attend to get their athletics physical for the 2019-2020 school year completed. This is a first come first serve event and we will do our best to get everyone thru as quickly and efficiently as possible.

Cost: $30 CASH ONLY ($20 goes to ELFP and $10 goes to ELCASM, receipts will be provided from both entities)

Please remember, should you choose to take your child to their primary care physician for their physical it must be on this form and on file with the athletic trainer prior to the start of your child’s sport season. Athletes who do not have a physical on file will not be permitted to participate in any practices or games.
