Curbside Pick-up of Books and DVDs
For those of you missing holding a book in your hand, the Somers Library has begun offering contactless curbside pick- up for books and other items. 
 
Please call the library at 914-232-5717 between the hours of 10 am and 3 pm Monday through Friday with your requests,  or fill out the form at the bottom of the page .   Staff will contact you when the items are ready for pickup, and schedule your appointment.

Please note that the Westchester Library System is only filling holds that are at our location.  If you place a hold online and we do not own the item, it will not be sent to the Somers Library.  If you get an automated notice that your items are ready, please call to schedule and appointment.

It is best to have an author or type of book in mind when you call rather than a specific title. We are happy to do title checks but many of our materials are out and new book arrivals are stalled in the warehouse. If you let us know that you like mysteries or enjoy books by a particular author, the library staff will do its best to find something you like. We can provide books for all ages
 
  • Hours for curbside pickup are Monday through Friday, 10 am - 3 pm
  • When contacting the library, be sure to give us your library card number and phone number or email address.
  • Genres and authors, rather than specific titles, work best due to limited availability.
  • We are limiting checkouts to 5 per household at this time.
  • The library will contact you to schedule an appointment when your items are ready for pickup.  Please wait for us to contact you before you come to the Library.
  • When you arrive at the library parking lot, call us from your car and please stay in your vehicle. We will bring the items out to a table set up at the bottom of the walkway. After we have gone back inside, you may retrieve the items from the table. If you are walking, please stay at least 6 feet from the table.
  • There will be a bin on the table to return any items you may have out. Please only return items during our curbside hours.  Patrons will get charged for items that are left outside and get damaged outside of our curbside hours.
  • Fines should not have accrued during our closing. All materials will be checked in as fine free during our curbside opening, to ensure our patrons will not be charged.
  • Please do not be alarmed if you check your account and see material you dropped off still checked out to you; we will check items in 1 week after you drop them off to protect library staff handling the items. 
  • For the safety of the staff and patrons please maintain the safety protocols as outlined by the Governor and the CDC.

Independence Day
The Somers Library will  not be opened

Friday, July 3rd 
in honor of Independence Day.

We will resume curbside pick-up on Monday, July 6th. 
The Library wishes all our patrons a happy, healthy and safe holiday weekend.

Important Note about the Senior Benefits Information Center (SBIC):  Our SBIC program coordinators are still providing Medicare counseling by phone and by email. Clients can leave a question and their preferred contact method and our counselors will get back to them within 2 business days or sooner. Virtual Poetry Workshop for Adults at the Somers Library. Thursdays, 6/4 - 6/25, 11:00 - 12:30 pm. Beginner and experienced poets "will hold these truths to be self-evident" that all poems can be created using trial and error, and serendipity along with learning the processes of craft in this poetry workshop. Discover your muse as Thea Schiller introduces an established poem, leads discussions and creates in-class writing exercises, leaving time to write and share each week. Participating members will be encouraged to expand their repertoire of poems. Please register.

Virtual Meeting of the Somers Library Book Group. Friday, June 5, from 2:30-3:30 p.m. We will virtually discuss via Zoom the landmark Isabel Wilkerson book, The Warmth of Other Suns: The Epic Story of America's Great Migration. Please register.

Teen Summer Reading Challenge 
June 26th - August 26th
For teens/tweens entering 6th grade & up! 

Register HERE!!
  • Prizes to each of the top 3 readers with the most pages read.
  • Raffle Prizes: Many gift baskets for lucky winners!
How To Get Raffle Tickets:
  • For every 100 pages read, earn 1 raffle ticket.
  • For every 1 review submitted, earn 1 raffle ticket.
  • Register Early- earn 2 raffle tickets for being one of the first 30 participants to sign up for the Teen Summer Reading Program!
  • Bonus: you can earn 4 raffle tickets by completing the weekly Teen Summer Reading (Fun) Task posted on the Teen Summer Reading Page every Monday beginning 6/29!
  • Bonus:  You can earn 4 raffle tickets by completing the bi-monthly Friday Photo Scavenger Hunt (every other Friday beginning on July 10: 7/10, 7/24, 8/7, 8/21).  
    The photos will be judged (by library staff) for originality and creativity. The top 3 submissions will earn an additional 4 raffle tickets each.

Tutor.com offers live online chat and email support for learners of all ages. You can check a homework question, send in an essay for review, prepare for a test, and even have a cover letter or résumé checked. Hay tutores que hablan español.  Note: Due to coronavirus, Tutor.com has expanded its tutoring hours from 9:00 am - 10:00 pm, Monday through Friday, until June 15.

You'll need your Somers Library card and pin.  This is a downloadable audiobook and eBook service offered by the Westchester Library System.

News from the
Friends of the Somers Library
"What in the world would we do without our libraries?"

Over the past four years, Somers High School students Daniel and Nathaniel Schwartz have been invaluable volunteers for Friends entertainment events, assisting in the setting up and breaking down of chairs, tables, or equipment. Their dedication has been an immense help to the entire community's ability to enjoy the programs at the library. We are grateful for their dedication! We also want to thank their parents who supported the boys' efforts by driving them to and from the library, helping out with set-up, etc.. Family participation is so important to the life of the library, as the Schwartz's have proven for four straight years! We wish Daniel and Nathaniel much success in their college careers. 

The WINK program's spring presentation was done via Zoom, and we thank everyone who attended. We also thank librarian Tara Ferretti, whose work in difficult circumstances allowed the program to go forward. We also want to acknowledge the partnership of Tracy Christen Reimann, who has been part of this program since its inception. We will be planning another WINK presentation this fall, although we don't know yet when or how that will be done.

As you know, all in-person library programs are cancelled for the foreseeable future. The Friends of the Somers Library will be ready to plan for future programming as soon as we are given the go-ahead. Thank you for your understanding.
