Keep your eyes on the horizon
Nineteen years ago and still this day, September 11, is so fresh in our memories. Even the weather today, in its crisp early chill and bright blue skies, is so much like that day it hurts. But here we are facing a whole new set of challenges and, every once in a while, some good things. Perhaps more than at any other time I can recall, I am appreciating the little things this year. Tonight at 6pm, we can all enjoy one of them: Caroline Spence will blow her horn of choice - a trumpet - and give us a song or two from the steps of the library. Caroline is a talented musician who has put aside the grand piano for the time being in favor of an instrument she can tuck under her arm and have at the ready. Let's join her this evening! She promises, if we show up tonight, she'll continue on Wednesdays at 6 pm - on the steps of the library. Mark your calendars.

I'm keeping it short today but event-full. Our partnership with Bookstock is ready for folks to register for a reading and conversation with a stellar lineup of authors. This coming week, Virtual Bookstock 2020 begins with poet, jazz scholar, and educator Reuben Jackson on Thursday, Sept 17 at 7 pm. Click here to register.

It's harvest time and we are holding our first book launch just in time! Sign up for Sustainable Kitchen: Recipes and Inspiration for Plant-Based, Planet-Conscious Meals, with local co-authors, dietician Heather Wolfe and designer Jaynie McCloskey. NWPL adult services director Kathy Beaird will host the event on Tuesday, Sept 22 at 7 pm as well as orchestrate the discussion. Bring your questions! But click here to register first - the event is free.

Do you think you've had your last swim of the season? I might have. There's always ice cream to squeeze out a little more of summer's pleasures and you can still manage a summer read before fall officially arrives. We have a LOT of new books at the library. Come pick one out or try curbside pick up. We'll soon have a copy of Reuben Jackson's "Scattered Clouds" and Heather Wolfe and Jaynie McCloskey's "Sustainable Kitchen." Or check with Yankee Bookshop to order your own. Buy local! Feed your brain.

I was there

finishing breakfast leftover coffee around 9:00
in the morning watching the news as usual
when I saw something impossible on tv
right in front of me in real time
that just couldn't be happening
