Good Earth
More Than a Store

Good Earth is a local, family owned produce and garden center that specializes in providing the freshest and tastiest local fruits, veggies, clean meats, free range eggs, and dairy from local farmers. We also support local bakers, families, and artisans by selling amazing homemade breads, casseroles and sweets, oils, jarred goodies, dried goods, soaps, candles, and oh so much more! Over the years, our faithful customers have repeatedly requested non-local produce that cannot be grown in our area, so we provide these products too. This time of year, you'll find our greenhouse full of gorgeous ready- to-plant spring flowers, hanging baskets, herbs, and veggies as well as houseplants and succulents. You can get almost anything else on-line or at the big box stores, but get the freshest produce and most beautiful plants right here at Good Earth. Experience the CSRA's little secret that's not a secret anymore! We were voted Best Produce 2018 by readers of the Augusta Magazine and are One of the Top 10 Best Farmers Markets in Georgia according to Yelp!

HIGH FAT SOMETIMES
IS HIGH HEALTHY!!

Cynthia F Catts,  RD, LD

Here at Good Earth, it's more than just our fabulous selection of produce and plants; we also carry so many healthy foods. The focus today is the healthy selection of fatty foods on our shelves.

Avocados :  They might be high in fat (around 21 g in a medium sized avocado), but it is mostly healthy  monounsaturated fat (the good kind!!). So enjoy one on your sandwich, in your salad, or in your  smoothie, knowing you're doing a healthy thing!!

Chocolate : Rich in antioxidants, dark chocolate is healthy candy! No guilt!! Studies suggest that 72% or greater chocolate improves blood flow to the heart, lowers blood pressure, and boosts HDL (good) cholesterol!

Nuts : Tree nuts and nut butters are great sources of monounsaturated fat, as well as protein! Walnuts contain omega 3 fatty acids (same as fish)!

Olive Oil : EVOO contains higher amounts of monounsaturated fat than any other edible oil!! We carry quality olive oils, like Cretan Mill, that contain anti-inflammatory properties similar to anti-inflammatory drugs like Ibuprofen and Motrin!

Happy healthy eating from all of us at Good Earth!!!

The Farmer's Market
Layers of Flavor

It feels like Christmas in April here in the market because this week marks the beginning of one of our favorite seasons: VIDALIA ONIONS! Georgia's state vegetable is in the house, and we are rooting for this root vegetable. Fans know, the Vidalia onion is more than just your average sweet onion. Thanks to the Vidalia Onion Act of 1986, when you buy a Vidalia onion at Good Earth, you can rest assured you're not being hoodwinked. True Vidalia onions can legally only be grown in certain counties of Georgia where the low levels of sulfur in the soil produce an exceptionally sweet, flavorful onion. Are they sweet enough to eat like an apple? We'll let our customers be the judge of that. We do know that Vidalia onions are amazing sauteed, grilled, caramelized, topped on a salad, blended into a soup, added to a burger, fried, baked into a tart, blended into dressing or dip, and so much more. Not only can you find the best Vidalias around in our market, we also have all the accessories you need to make the most of the season. For ease and instant gratification, the Vidalia onion cooker will whip up a tasty appetizer in minutes. For the more adventurous at heart, or if you just like the idea of eating bloomin' onions without leaving home, pick up batter mix, dipping sauce, and a Vidalia onion blossom kit. Of course you can be sure to find all the other onion staples on our shelves, including Vidalia relish, salsa, chow chow, and creamy dressing. It's onion-mazing.

Our Greenhouse
A Love Story with a Fairy Tale Ending

There's nothing quite like the feeling you get when you make eye contact for the first time. The rush of joy, the rapid heart flutters, the sudden desire to worship her beauty as long as you possibly can. Don't be ashamed if you experience these sensations when falling in love with your hanging basket; you're not alone. Our geranium and petunia baskets have starred in many love stories over the years, and here in the greenhouse we get to play matchmaker. However, the best part of a love story isn't the beginning, it's always the happy ending, and we want to make sure your new baskets stay as beautiful in your home as the day you first locked eyes. So, we've compiled a few tips and tricks to keep these gorgeous ladies show-stopping all season long.

Light: Petunias and geraniums are definitely sun-lovers, and at least six hours of sun is ideal to keep them from getting weak and leggy. That being said, there are very few living things that truly appreciate the type of afternoon heat that we are subject to in the later months of the summer, so if temperatures are soaring into the 90's, your babies will weep with gratitude for a few hours of afternoon shade.

Food & Drink: Both petunias and geraniums do best with thorough morning waterings. They do prefer soil that dries slightly in between waterings, but on a breezy, sunny day, you'll rarely find that this is an issue! In the heat of the summer, or on particularly windy days,  a second evening watering may be necessary. For blooms that last, pull baskets under cover during rain storms and water the soil directly when watering. Keeping the leaves and blooms relatively dry will go a long way in preventing disease and mushy blossoms. Additionally, a balanced fertilizer will promote healthy foliage and blooms all season long. Try a slow release product like Osmocote- just sprinkle it on the soil and let your waterings do the rest!

Hair Cuts: Every lady needs some occasional primping to look her best, and your baskets are no exception. Spent blooms and yellowing leaves should be removed as soon as possible. For geraniums, make sure you break the stem off at the base of the plant to encourage new growth and prevent legginess. Don't be afraid to pinch back growth that has become slightly wild in order to maintain a shapely plant.

Most importantly, for a beautiful relationship that lasts, make sure you find your soilmate here at Good Earth!
