Mamie V. Martin Day
Proclaimed in Covington
She arrived to Covington by horse drawn wagon with her family as a young child from her birthplace in Mississippi.  She worked hard with her husband building their house with their own hands and created the home where they raised nine children and where all six generations of her family come to visit - - though not all 167 grandchildren, great and great great grandchildren at the same time.

Mrs. Martin instilled the importance of education in all of her children and was proud when each of them graduated high school and many went on to college.

Mrs. Martin made significant contributions to the Covington community most notably as one of the founders of Bethel Reformed Methodist Church (along with the Reverend Peter Atkins), through the church Missionary Society and as a member of the Greater Covington Chapter of the NAACP.

I was privileged to visit with Miss Mamie and her family on her 100th birthday. On behalf of the City of Covington, I, Mayor Mark, proclaimed Monday, August 24th Mamie V. Martin Day.

She is a remarkable woman and a pure delight to visit.

I was able to share with her and some of her family the life values of the Reverend Peter Atkins which of course, she knew about, but had not seen in probably 30 years. Our park on N. Tyler and 28th Avenue is named for the Reverend.

Oh, and I got to take a selfie with Miss Mamie : )

Signing up for utility bill auto-pay (from your checking account, no additional fees) decreases paperwork at City Hall, thereby making Government more efficient. That's a good thing.
