From the Rector

Dear Parishioners and Friends of St. Mary's,

This week we will celebrate Trinity Sunday . Trinity Sunday is one of the few feasts in the church where we celebrate a doctrine and not a person or an event. We have saints' days like St. Mary the Virgin, and we have feasts that celebrate events like last week's glorious Pentecost celebration, which marked the coming of the Holy Spirit. Trinity Sunday celebrates the doctrine of the church, which holds that "God is three persons in one substance, the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit."   It is central to our faith and it is also the stuff of schisms and arguments down through the ages. By and large it is a day when most rectors assign their associates and deacons to preach so they don't have to wade in the mire of this doctrine, which is so misunderstood and so hard to describe. It seems like the moment we begin to try to describe the Holy Trinity we have committed hearsay. I hope not to do that this Sunday! I do love this feast day though because it points to the relational nature of God and the relational nature of our faith. It also underscores for me the reality that our faith is not about what we can prove, but about a mystery that we are called to live into. The Eastern Orthodox bishop and theologian Kallistos Ware says it best I think in his book The Orthodox Way . "We see that it is not the task of Christianity to provide easy answers to every question, but it make us progressively aware of a mystery. God is not so much the object of our knowledge as the cause of our wonder."   Let us join together Sunday as we continue to live into the mystery of our faith.

All seniors of our St. Mary's and their friends are welcome to the Senior Lunch  on Saturday June 22, beginning at 11:30 a.m. It is time to kick off the first weekend of summer with a good old fashioned picnic (In the Great Hall). Stop in for a great lunch followed by bingo and door prizes. Please let me or Amy know if you are planning to come so we can have enough food on hand. All are welcome and please bring friends!

This Saturday June 15th is our Free Community Meal from 5:00-7:00 p.m. A great summer meal is planned and you don't need to do the cooking. Stop in for the great food and hospitality and meet up with friends old and new.

I will be visiting family this coming week and be out of the office .   Please don't hesitate to contact Amy or Co-Warden Tracy Higgins should you have a pastoral care emergency.

Thank you to everyone who made our Pentecost celebration so wonderful last Sunday. To Missy Spengel for flying our dove, to John Amrein who prepared the church with our banners and red drape, to Peter and El who led the music in Sandy's absence, to the choir who did a wonderful job and added to our celebration, and to Cheri Dudek who hosted a wonderful festive coffee hour as we celebrated the birthday of the church. Thank you all.

Finally, I'd like to wish all of our fathers and grandfathers a very happy and blessed Father's Day !

Blessings,
Fran+

Diocesan Event in July

St. James Cathedral in Chicago is hosting  An Evening with Presiding Bishop Michael Curry , on Wednesday, July 31 , at 6:30 p.m.   Tickets may be purchased online for $22, and the price includes a signed copy of his book,   "The Power of Love: Sermons, Reflections, and Wisdom to Uplift and Inspire".    If you are interested, please get your tickets ASAP, as they will likely sell out.   Rev. Fran and a few parishioners have already expressed an interest in attending, so perhaps a group could get together and car pool, or take the train. Contact Fran if you're interested. Tickets can be purchased online here.

Photos from  Pentecost Sunday ! We baptized Alessandra Enriqueta Rivera, daughter of Jessica (Garst) and Ramon Rivera. We also had special visitors with us: Carl & Joan, brother and sister-in-law of the late Deacon Barb Bishop, and Jim & Kathy, dear friends of the late Bob & Barb Bishop. We also thanked Catherine Carroll for her many years of ministry to the youth of the parish.
