Fall 2020 ENGL 102 Update
Sent on behalf of the College of Arts & Sciences and English Department
The English Department has reduced the number of ENGL 102 sections offered in Fall 2020. This is part of the plan to better balance fall/spring offerings and help with staffing and classroom space needs.

Please share with entering students who have already completed ENGL 101 that they may need to wait until spring to take ENGL 102. There will be enough sections of ENGL 102 for everyone who needs to complete it in their first year.

College of Arts & Sciences - Fall 2020 Course Labs Information
Sent on behalf of the College of Arts & Sciences
Departments and Programs across the College of Arts and Sciences have creatively addressed challenges of Fall course delivery.  A number of labs are being taught in person with reduced capacity. Some labs are being delivered using a mix of in person and online learning, and yet other labs are moving completely online. Delivery is dependent on room and equipment capacity.

  • CHEMISTRY - created mirror sections for all labs, such that sections meet on alternating weeks. Adapted experiments so only 12 students will be in a lab room at a given time, with additional remote learning during non in-person weeks. Large lecture sections have been split so that students have both in-class and online learning.
  • BIOLOGY - many courses and labs similar to CHEM. BIOL 101, 102, and 301 labs will only be offered online with the support of CTE due to space and equipment constraints. Biology teaching labs will open during the scheduled meeting times. Students can choose to come each week (or every other depending on the curriculum) for a short mini-session to learn a skill/technique and have the opportunity to ask questions directly. Note: this is an optional activity and no in person lab work will be graded.
  • DANCE & THEATER - Reduced the number of students within a specific section and are reworking activities to eliminate direct touch while following appropriate health precautions. There will be no in person performances in the Fall, but they are working on producing online events.

Lab Fees - The laboratory fees are essential to ensuring instructional capacity is maximized to enhance the student’s educational experience. While these courses are online, we are still utilizing equipment, materials, glassware, etc. in order to create videos of experiments that will hopefully give students as close to an in-lab experience as possible.  The student may not be using the materials in-person there are a different set of costs associated (filming equipment, editing, personnel to run the experiment-film-edit-prepare online material-monitor online material).

Fall PEDU courses update
Sent on behalf of the Physical Education Department
There have been changes to the Fall 2020 PEDU courses.  Some of you will have students impacted by these changes. First, students who were enrolled in any PEDU class section that has been cancelled entirely have been informed via email. Students may reach out to you for re-advisement if they need to enroll in the missing credit hours. Students were not contacted directly if a PEDU class was moved online but no other changes were made so should, as with all Fall 2020 courses, check their schedule for format changes and discuss with their academic advisor. The Physical Activity Program has maintained a robust schedule of 104 PEDU sections that can be conducted safely in person or virtually. If you have specific questions, please contact Gary Nave at [email protected].

Summer Procedures for Foreign Language Placement Tests
Sent on behalf of Tim McAteer, Foreign Language Placement Director
This summer, we will offer French, German, Latin and Spanish exams remotely to incoming freshmen and transfer students. (If a student wishes to take a different language exam, however, they must wait and take that once the campus reopens.)

Students should register for a specific testing date through our placement website at  http://artsandsciences.sc.edu/language-placement/home  (Option #1).  Once registered, they will receive a confirmation email with details about the exam. If you have questions or if there is anything unclear, please let me know.
Override Resource for Advisors
Sent on behalf of the University Advising Center
In some instances, students can reach out directly to the professor or department contact to request an override into a course. In other instances, however, students must complete an override request form or sign up for a seat notification in alert.
