Innovation: Why Take the Risk?

Today health care industry conversations often veer toward innovation. This isn’t new for research, clinical advancement, care delivery, diagnostic tests, surgical procedures and the like; but we now think about it in relationship to, well, just about everything.
From patient care excellence to OR scheduling and from social determinants of health to behavioral health – we’re constantly pushing ourselves and our teams to change, improve, and think differently. And, innovative efforts often yield much-needed data related to impact, which helps us to think strategically about return on investment.
We know Maryland’s hospitals and health systems always push boundaries to help people in our communities thrive and to care for them when their health is threatened. Many of you have chronicled your accomplishments in submissions to our

.
The term innovation is heavily applied to all that we’re doing. As I speak with so many of you around the state, it seems there is a fair amount of innovation fatigue to go along with it. While continuous improvement is vital, in some instances it’s perfectly fine — advantageous, even — to focus on consistency and best practices. I recently read a
STAT piece
that looks at this dilemma.
So, let’s continue to innovate. And, let’s make sure we fully deploy the tried and true.

Hospitals Asked To Commit To Good Stewardship of 340B
|
|
Maryland’s 340B hospitals have an opportunity to sign onto a set of principles to help guide good stewardship of the program. The principles were released in September by the American Hospital Association. The effort is intended to strengthen the program by increasing transparency while helping 340B hospitals better communicate its immense value for vulnerable patients and communities. Are You Looking to Elevate Patient Experience?

The Maryland Hospital Association is hosting a Patient Experience Shared Learnings Conference aimed at re-energizing your teams and sharing different approaches to improve patient experience. Carrie Brady, a nationally recognized Hospital Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems (HCAHPS) expert, will offer her insights, and attendees also will learn about key takeaways from MHA’s Patient Experience Peer-to-Peer Pilot program. Hogan Calls Special Session
|
|
Last week, Gov. Larry Hogan officially called a special session of the Maryland General Assembly for May 1. The special session will allow the House of Delegates to elect a successor to the late Speaker Michael E. Busch. Maggie McIntosh, chair of the Appropriations Committee, Dereck Davis, chair of the Economic Matters Committee, and Adrienne Jones, Speaker Pro Tem, are running to become the next Speaker of the Maryland House of Delegates. ECIP Deadlines Approaching, Resources Available
|
|
Current Care Redesign Program (CRP) hospitals can enroll mid-year in the Episode Care Improvement Program (ECIP) for a July 1 start. The implementation protocols for midyear enrollment into ECIP Track must be submitted to CRISP by May 1. Additional resources, including recordings from past informational webinars, are available

Save the Date: MHA's 2019 Annual Membership Meeting
|
|
Registration is now open
for your Maryland Hospital Association’s 2019 Annual Membership Meeting. An evening reception is scheduled for June 10, and the general session is scheduled for June 11, from 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. The keynote speaker for the event is Captain “Sully” Sullenberger, and Adam Boehler, senior adviser to the Secretary for the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services and Director of the Center for Medicare and Medicaid Innovation, also will be featured.
