Community Brief from Endeavor Elementary
"We Rise by Lifting Others"
Friday, September 11, 2020

After the unconventional start to the 2020-2021 school year, we are off and running! Teachers are planning engaging standards-based lessons for our Face-to-Face students as well as for those that selected the LaunchED model. Our goal remains to provide students the same educational experience regardless of the delivery system.

I would also like to recognize the efforts made to keep our school a healthy environment for our Navigators. Common areas are routinely sanitized and procedures have been put in place to limit student exposure. The safety and well-being of our students is of paramount importance and we will continue to implement the guidelines developed by the school district.

Please look for information regarding Endeavor's Virtual Open House scheduled for October 13 - October 16. Our students and teachers are eager to showcase the wonderful learning that has been occurring on and off campus this year.

Working as a team, I'm confident that when school life returns to normal our students can make a seamless transition. Until then, I thank you for your continued support of our children.

Today's edition of The Navigator News is dedicated to all the men and women who lost their lives on 9/11.

Have a great weekend.

It was a day of "first" for the Riberon Family. Mr. Riberon joined the Endeavor staff as our new art teacher. Mrs. Riberon moved from second to fourth grade and the boys enjoyed their first day in the first and third grade. The Riberon's are truly a Navigator family!
The entire Riberon family, proudly holding up their "1st Day" signs, are members of our Navigator family this year!

To ensure limited contact between students, each of the staircases in the lobby have been designated a grade level. Single grade level use safeguards against students crossing each other in the hallways.

To ensure that our students are socially distanced during lunch when face coverings are off, Navigator decals are placed on benches indicating where students can sit. Students sit in the same seats every day to make contact tracing possible in the event it should be needed.

Fourth grade students in Ms. Cordero's class use digital tools during their math lesson just like their Launched counterparts as they learn about place value.  Face-to-Face students use platforms like Canvas and Nearpod to gain proficiency and fluency comparable to our LaunchED children.

On her last day as a Navigator, Ms. Gallagher reminisced about the twenty years she spent teaching art at Endeavor Elementary. Ms. Gallagher was here when the school first opened its doors in August of 2000. Her final moments were fit for a queen as she walked the halls waving to students, teachers and staff. Upon her departure she was showered with yellow roses. Ms. Gallagher you will be missed!

Congratulations to Mrs. Hayes and her family as Endeavor's Bayou of Books was the location where her husband received his promotion in rank. We thank Mr. Hayes for his service to our nation and are grateful he allowed us to be a small part of his military history.

There is an addition to the front of Endeavor Elementary! House colored feather banners welcome our students to each new day. They serve as a reminder of our Navi G.A.T.O.R. expectations of: Good Manners, Always Attentive, Taking Responsibility, On Time/On Task and Respect Everyone.

All over campus we have placed decals to help our students with social distancing. Arrows create one way corridors to ensure we do not have students passing each other while in transit. Wrong way decals keep us moving in the right direction. Stickers with feet guarantee that students keep a safe distance when walking the hallways and Navi marks spots where students can sit during dismissal.

We would like to thank our teachers that are in the building working directly with children and lifting their spirts and providing them with a safe learning environment. We are grateful for your commitment and dedication to our Navigators!

High Expectations for Student Learning - LAFS.3.W.1.3 Write narratives to develop real or imaged experiences or events using effective techniques, descriptive details and clear event sequence. (b). Use dialogue and description of actions, thoughts and feelings to develop experiences and events or show the response of character situations.

Third grade Face-to-Face students learned about quotation marks and writing dialogue by creating a new scene in the book they are reading, 'Judy Mood Gets Famous.' Using pictures and speech bubbles, students demonstrate their knowledge of the main characters.

Meanwhile in the virtual classrooms, students tackled the same skill with story boards where they typed their responses in the speech bubbles provided by their teachers.

Mr. Knappins and Mr. Diaz surprised all our Face-to-Face teachers with basket filled with supplies to help keep their classrooms spotless. The wipes, face shields, and extra masks for teachers & students will certainly help Endeavor meet all the CDC guidelines.

Social and Emotional Well Being

On the first day of face-to-face classes, Ms. Acosta received a lovely bouquet of flowers from one of her students and his family. In the spirit of this year's school theme of "lifting up others," this kind gesture truly raised her spirits.

High Expectations for Student Learning

In order for fourth grade LaunchED students to benefit from the same rich literature and classroom resources that our face-to-face students are receiving, Ms. Pabon and Ms. Riberon set up a time when parents could drive by and pick up individualized packets for their children.

We would like to thank our parents that are bringing their LaunchED students to school for one-on-one testing. Individual assessments allows for greater personalized instruction.

High Expectations for Student Learning - LASF.1.W.1.3 Write narratives in which they recount two or more appropriately sequenced events, include some details regarding what happened, use temporal words to signal event order and provide some sense of closure.

First grade students working at home or at school wrote stories about a time when they made a new friend. Temporal words such as first, next, then, and last help to keep events in order and provide a conclusion.
