THREE-FOOT MODEL OF THE SS UNITED STATES BY FOLK ARTIST WAYNE KUSY DONATED TO THE CONSERVANCY

Model Commissioned by Supporter John Mark
Internationally-renowned folk artist Wayne Kusy's toothpick models of 20th Century ocean liners, including the RMS Titanic, RMS Lusitania, and the SS America, which can sometimes take years to construct, have been featured in major U.S. publications and TV shows, including People Magazine, Rachel Ray, and ABC’s Good Morning America. Constructed from glue and toothpicks, Kusy's models have been a life-long passion for him and an incredible creative outlet.

Last year, John Mark, a Philadelphia-area SS United States enthusiast and supporter of the Conservancy commissioned Kusy to construct a 3-foot long model of America's Flagship, the SS United States (pictured here).

After taking delivery of the model, John and Wayne recently connected in Philadelphia so the artist could see the ship’s full-size inspiration, and to present the model to the Conservancy. Constructed using more than 16,000 toothpicks, the model features all of the SS United States' most famous features, including her iconic red, white and blue funnels, lifeboats, and even its outdoor game courts.

Dr. Phillip Marion, Administrative & Program Associate, for the SS United States Conservancy, met Wayne and John across the street from SS United States’ berth at Pier 82 in Philadelphia, and spoke with both men about their passion of historic ocean liners, especially the SS United States.

MORE FROM THE SS UNITED STATES CONSERVANCY
Galileo TV (Germany) recently profiled America's Flagship and the Conservancy's fight to save her in a special feature, "Retired Legend: SS United States."

The five-minute long segment features shipboard interviews with Conservancy President Susan Gibbs, plus an array of historic images and video.

The holidays are right around the corner. With heightened concerns about shipping delays this year, now is the perfect time to purchase this beautiful ornament to add to your holiday collection or give to an SS United States supporter you know.

Mike Riehl, aka "The Ornament Guy,” offers multiple ornament selections available for sale that are all hand-painted, including this one that depicts the SS United States cutting through the water with her powerful hull.

THE BIG U CONTINUES TO INSPIRE...

"I love big ships, I love big moving metal objects such as trains, planes, submarines, and such, and to me the SS United States is the best one of the bunch."

- John Mark, SS United States Conservancy supporter
