Canadian Women's Pro League
Shuts Down May 1

The Canadian Women's Hockey League (CWHL) announced it will cease operations May 1, after 12 years. The CWHL, which had six teams in Canada and China this season, said the league's business model was unsustainable. The U.S.-based National Women's Hockey League (NWHL) has five teams.

Study Shows Safety Rule Changes Helped Limit High School Hockey Concussions

A research brief on new checking rules, leading to decreased concussion rates in high school hockey players, was presented at the annual meeting of the American Medical Society for Sports Medicine (AMSSM). Stricter penalties for boarding and checking from behind drastically reduced concussion injury rates, according to the study.

Men's Recruiting Rules

The NCAA announced changes that will slow down the Division I men's hockey recruiting process. Players will be required to be further into high school when contact is allowed with college coaches, or to receive verbal scholarship offers.

Kraft Hockeyville
Winners Announced

Calumet, Michigan and Renous, New Brunswick were the Kraft Hockeyville 2019 award winners for the USA and Canada respectively. They will receive funds for arena upgrades and equipment and have the chance to host an NHL preseason game.


Penguins and Youth Hockey in Pittsburgh

Hockey is thriving today in Pittsburgh with the success of the Penguins and the youth scene. The road to success has not been easy, however, as there were doubts about the long-term vitality of the sport in the 1970s.
