Jordan Casteel: Returning the Gaze will feature nearly 30 paintings by Denver-born artist Jordan Casteel, who is now based in Harlem, New York. This presentation represents Casteel’s first major museum exhibition, and provides audiences with a first look at new work by one of the most acclaimed emerging artists working today.
The exhibition will bring together a body of work made from 2014 to 2018, with new paintings that reveal Casteel’s evolving practice and a shift in subject matter ranging from cityscapes and subway scenes to women and local business owners. Casteel’s approach to selecting subjects involves walking around her neighborhood and taking photographs. By transforming these photographs into larger-than-life portraits with subtle shifts in light, bold colors, and gestural brushwork, Casteel reveals individuals and atmospheres that often go unnoticed.

Thru Aug 24| 10:00 am - 6 pm | Museo de las Americas | Gen. Adm.
Liminal Space is a transitional or transformative space. A waiting area between one point in time and space and the next. Just like how our cultures and communities are diverse and varied, so too is the beautiful, enchanting and creative history of art. Thankfully being Latino isn't just a singular experience and in this exhibition you will see how these creative local artists are taking the knowledge and tradition of the past and its experiences and transforming our perceptions about cultural interpretations and identities into something that is new and original.
In this exhibition, the artists and their creative vision represent a basis of exploration for the audience's own Liminal Space, through which they develop a sense of their own experience and interpretation. It is easy to fall under the illusion that looking at art is a simple thing. However, the work in this show is not about what are you looking at but what is it you see.

Thru Aug 25 | 10:00 am - 6 pm | Denver Museum of Nature & Science | Gen. Adm.

There's a place from which nothing escapes, not even light, where time and space literally come to end. It's at this point, inside this fantastic riddle, that black holes exert their sway over the cosmos … and our imaginations.
In this Museum-produced show, zip through other-worldly wormholes, experience the creation of the Milky Way Galaxy, and witness the violent death of a star and subsequent birth of a black hole. Mathematical equations, cutting-edge science, and Einstein's theories fill in holes along the way, providing the most complete picture yet on this mysterious phenomenon. Can you feel the pull?

Thru Dec 31 | 10:00 am - 6 pm | Colorado Springs Fine Arts Center | Gen. Adm.
The art works presented in three galleries highlight some of the most celebrated work by indigenous and Latina/o artists in the FAC’s permanent collection. This exhibition explores individual stylistic movements, artists, and topics such as colonial encounters, art markets, and creative innovation, among other subjects. Art works in these galleries will be periodically rotated in an effort to feature a wide range of artworks from the FAC’s extensive collection.

LOVESEAT with Mouse Couch is a two course meal of long form improvisation. Each week Mouse Couch invites a team they love to present a long form appetizer that hints at what you’ll see in the main course. Then Mouse Couch bends, stretches and breaks your expectations.
Mouse Couch takes an organic journey from the everyday to the fantastical — from teenage shenanigans on a tilt-o-whirl to the moon or from a dance contest to the inside of a T-Rex. They discover next idea in the moment and bring the audience along with them, one simple step at a time. The Mouse Couch philosophy is to play characters that love each other, use big physicality to inform choices/emotion and surrender to the group mind. Each show takes a unique form and plays with a unique theme, but it is always one hundred percent Mouse Couch.

Thru Jun 23 | Varies | Miners Alley Playhouse
Miners Alley Playhouse has commissioned award-winning playwright Josh Hartwell to write the compelling, untold, and true story of Mae Brussell, considered to be America’s first mainstream conspiracy theorist during the 1960's and 1970's. The one-time Queen of Conspiracy attracted an audience of thousands. Her radio shows analyzed public government records to link the JFK and RFK assassinations with the Watergate scandal. Loyal fans and celebrities looking to make sense of an increasingly complex, crazy world were hungry for Brussell's version of the truth. With humor and wit, Josh Hartwell's new drama, set in present-day Denver, imagines the family who inherits Brussell's legacy. The play also explores what a conspiracy is, and the difference between today's conspiracy theories and those of the past.

Monthly 4th Friday Thru Dec 27 | 11:00 pm | Denver's Dangerous Theatre
Every 4th Friday at 11pm at Dangerous Theatre hosts Kira Magcalen and Allison Rose will present a killer lineup of local and national comedians!
At this event local comedians and story tellers share their most embarrassing and shameful moments with the audience. The audience is to laugh at their sorrow and shame then offer unconditional love with a rousing 3 part harmony of "We still like you!" It's a raucous celebration of being able to recognize the shame in all of us. Because if we're all idiots, none of us are.

With his formidable trio colleagues  Linda May Han Oh (acoustic/electric bass) and  Henry Cole  (drums), and string quartet on just one track, Fabian Almazan unveils music of both extraordinary complexity and transparent beauty. He employs electronics, his own field recordings from Cuba, and other devices to create an epic portrait of nature and folkloric expression, wrought by one of the most advanced jazz sensibilities in the world today.
Almazan, Oh and Cole debuted as a trio in 2011 on Personalities, celebrating with a breakthrough week at the Village Vanguard that was webcast by NPR. That core trio remained integral to the lineup of Almazan’s next project, the hybrid ensemble Rhizome, adding string quartet and Camila Meza on vocals (documented on the albums Rhizome and Alcanza), reflecting the leader’s extensive training in classical composition. With This Land Abounds With Life, Almazan returns his focus to the Personalities trio, a smaller unit that nonetheless also conveys the full scope of his emotional and far-reaching vision.

Over the past 20 years, Harris has steadily developed his reputation as one of the finest vocalists of his era. Brooklyn-born and Harlem-based, he has forged his sterling credentials through his ten previous albums, covering a broad range of contexts, all netted together within the rich territory of the jazz tradition. In addition to his recordings, he has performed on a worldwide stage that has taken him to prestigious international festivals and halls in Europe, the Middle East and Asia, as well as the 2012 Olympics in London. At home, he has toured nationally at festivals and top venues, including New York’s Lincoln Center and D.C.’s Kennedy Center. He has received numerous awards, including the New York Nightlife Award for “Outstanding Jazz Vocalist” (which he won three times), the Backstage Bistro Award for “Ongoing Achievement in Jazz,” the Harlem Speaks “Jazz Museum of Harlem Award,” and the DownBeat Critic’s Poll Award for “Rising Star Vocalist.” Nobody’s Gonna Love You Better (Black Bar Jukebox Redux) will continue to build his legacy as another milestone in the extraordinary artistic aesthetic of Allan Harris.
