President's Message: Engaging Students Through Living Learning Communities |
Dear Colleagues,
As we complete our fourth week of the semester, I wanted to reflect on a visit I made to one of our Living Learning Communities (LLCs) in the First Year Village. As I spoke with the Leadership and Communication LLC students during their COMMS 145 class, they demonstrated a solid grasp of the theory to which they have been exposed and a nuanced understanding of its application. They also shared their excitement about their first month together and the projects on which they have worked during their introduction to the Hill.
While not new to WKU, LLCs continue to expand across our campus, and the introduction of the First Year Village this fall boosts that expansion with 13 of the 22 LLCs residing in our newly opened Normal and Regents Halls.
Academic engagement must remain central to all we do as a community. These new facilities and the integration of academics into the life of students in their residence halls provide a powerful intervention that will alter the WKU Experience for these young people.

Dear Colleagues,
At its core, a university is devoted to the discovery and transmission of knowledge. The university cannot be limited in its methods and ways of thinking or be confined to one individual’s or a single community’s experiences. We must bring a broad range of ideas and approaches to the table to solve complex social problems, to discover the next breakthrough in science, or to reach new heights of artistic expression.
To advance our educational mission, exposure to diverse views, values, and cultures is essential. Such engagement expands our horizons, enables understanding across differences, prevents complacency, and promotes intellectual breadth. We must strive to ensure that diversity of cultures, races and ethnicities, genders, political and religious beliefs, physical and learning differences, sexual orientations and identities is present and thriving on our campus.

Communities for Immunity grant supports presentation, exhibit |
The Kentucky Museum and Kentucky Folklife Program have received a Communities for Immunity grant from the Association of Science and Technology Centers in partnership with the Institute of Museum and Library Services and the Centers for Disease Control. The grant will support a Zoom talk and Smithsonian Institution poster exhibition, Outbreak, that focus on discussing infectious diseases, folklore, and the role and responsibility of individuals in stopping the spread of diseases such as COVID-19.

Groups partner to kick off Hispanic Heritage Month |
On Sept. 15, the WKU Hilltopper Organization for Latin American Students (HOLAS) hosted All Around the World to kick off Hispanic Heritage Month. The WKU Spanish Club, Korean Pop Culture Club, and Intercultural Student Engagement Center partnered with HOLAS to make this event a great success.

With a new interactive format, the 2021 English Convocation was held Sept. 10 in HCIC 1011, and with the advantage of pleasant weather, was also able to be partially outside. “In the past, the Convocation has been a more static event, with individuals coming up to speak briefly about our programs and the different experiences, resources, and opportunities available to English department majors and minors, following by a bit of mingling. This year, with having the different tables and folks moving about and the scavenger hunt, we had a lot more active engagement, both student-to-student and student-to-faculty. We’ll definitely try something like this again next year,” said Dr. Alison Langdon, head of the English Department. |
