64 SECONDS to Learn Up To  25 THINGS about St. Louis Park High School
April 18, 2019

1:   From the Principal

Our Norm to "support each other with a collaborative approach" was very evident this week.  My week started with a collective overview of our existing construction projects.  I am very thankful for all of the contractors and design professionals that have contributed to a great start to our projects.  Although these projects never start without any hitches, I appreciate the problem solving and pre planning that was occurring.  Most of all I am excited about our future facilities.

Collaboration was also evident as I worked with department leaders and counseling staff to help solidify registration.  It is no small task to staff and populate our classes and I appreciate the collective wisdom of all involved to help build our schedule.  This process will continue into the summer, but I appreciate our work together so far.

Principal
2:  Academic Awards/Scholarship Night
Based on feedback that we received on the length of the scholarship and awards night, we have separated these two events. The Academic Awards will take place on the morning of Tuesday, May 21st in the Auditorium. Doors will open at 7:00 a.m. with refreshments and music provided by our orchestra department. The event will start at 7:30 am.

The Scholarship night will be held on Wednesday, May 22nd at 7:00 p.m. in the auditorium. Refreshments will follow. Invitations will be mailed out to recipients in the beginning of May. We are excited to take this opportunity to celebrate with the class of 2019!
3:  2019 Career Expo - Experience, Learn, and VOTE?
On Wednesday, April 24 St. Louis Park High School students will attend the 9th annual Career EXPO!  Students will visit and learn from over 70 career guests!  We have guests from all areas of the MN Career Wheel (see attached).

Introduction to Ranked Choice Voting
During the Career Expo students will have the opportunity to become a voter in the first ever St. Louis Park ranked-choice election hosted by the City's Election Team. They can vote at the career expo and during all school lunches.  The races on the ballot will be:
  • Their favorite way of receiving communication from the school
  • Their favorite school meal
  • School passing time music, played during the last week of school
In order to prepare students, we ask that you play the  one minute video  to provide information on ranked-choice voting. Our table will have interactive elements like voting booths, a ballot counter and a selfie station. Each ballot will look like a real ballot, and be submitted into the ballot counter, students will receive an 'I Voted' sticker and see results the following week.
4:  World Drumming Performance

Last Friday, ten students from the SLPHS World Drumming Ensemble were were asked to perform at the national BARR (Building Assets Reducing Risks) conference at the DoubleTree Hotel in St. Louis Park. They played four beats for the education professionals as a warm-up before a keynote speaker. They played music from West Africa, the Caribbean and North Africa. They received an enthusiastic and positive reception from the almost 500 audience members.
5:  SLPHS Band Competition at Edina HS
On Monday, April 15th, a record 38 SLPHS band students competed in 27 different events at the Region 6AA Solo/Ensemble Festival at Edina High School.

The students, with Mr. Schmitz or private teachers or on their own, learned either a solo with piano accompaniment or played in a small ensemble. A majority, 13, of the events earned the top grade possible (Superior) from judges. One student, Anavey Hosack, earned almost a perfect score (39/40) and earned the Best of Site Award. This means that of all the students from all the area schools that the judge heard that night, Anavey's was the best event he heard.
