PARKS & RECREATION ROUNDUP
SEPTEMBER 8, 2020
Welcome to the Parks & Recreation Roundup, a bi-monthly publication aimed at
keeping the community informed on our programs, events, and partnerships
DEPARTMENT HIGHLIGHTS
Storm Damage Clean-Up Tips
Today's storm did significant damage to many of the trees in our area. We want to take this opportunity to remind the public of several important safety precautions before you fire up the chainsaws. Make sure to check for downed utility lines first. Do not approach if lines are down, and call your utility company. Survey the area and any potential hazards including falling limbs or structures. When in doubt, call the pro's!
Adult Wiffle Ball League
Looking for a fun activity to do with your friends this fall while also social distancing? Check out the new Adult Wiffle Ball League offered beginning September 17. League play will take place Thursday evenings through October 15, beginning at 5:30 PM on Vanatta Field at Howelsen Hill. Each team can have up to 10 players on the roster, with 6 players on the field. Visit the website to register by September 14.
Fall Bulb & Peony Benefit
The Yampa River Botanic Park will host their annual Fall Bulb & Peony Benefit from October 5 to 9. The benefit will feature a selection of unique and remarkable bulbs that thrive in the Yampa Valley, including species of tulips, daffodils, muscari, allium, peonies and more! Included will be hard to find varieties chosen for form, color, smell, and hardiness. Visit the park's website for event hours and additional details.
New Location & More Spaces!
Additional space has been secured for our school year youth programming, which has provided additional capacity for our new Education Exploration program. If you are still looking for full-day care on your child's at-home school days, additional space is now available. Programming will move from Howelsen Hill to the Community Center on September 14. Registration for Session II will open online on September 28 at 8 AM.
Yampa River Remains Closed
While we may see some flow increases after today's winter weather, flows on the Yampa River have dropped below 85 CFS, triggering both commercial and voluntary recreational closures. Due to the low river flows, in conjunction with high water temps and low oxygen levels, the City and CPW ask that the public adhere to the voluntary closure and refrain from recreating in and around the river until reopened.
