Inductees for 2019

The National Honor Society (NHS) is the nation’s premier organization established to recognize outstanding high school students. NHS serves to recognize those students who have demonstrated excellence in the areas of scholarship, service, leadership, and character. These characteristics have been associated with membership in the organization since its beginning in 1921.

Today, it is estimated that more than one million students participate in NHS activities. This spring, both West Allis Central and West Allis Nathan Hale High School welcomed new inductees to this organization. Read more...

State of the Schools

What happens when a school district faces significant financial challenges, declining student achievement, declining enrollment, a complete transition of the senior leadership team, and at the same time, teachers and principals remain committed and focused on kids and start trying new things? The answer was “it improves.” And that is due to the work we are doing in our classrooms, particularly in the five schools that exceeded expectations on the State Report Card. Learn more about our efforts HERE .

James E. Dottke Sets a Course for Project-Based Learning

For over 35 years, James E. Dottke High School has been working hard to serve the needs of students that flourish in a smaller school setting. According to principal Greg Goelz, “Our District understands that the traditional comprehensive high school experience does not meet the needs of every student. Dottke has been the answer for these students.

To meet the needs of all students, the staff at Dottke has been on the forefront of best practices in Deeper Learning. “Deeper Learning is an umbrella term for the skills and knowledge that students must possess to be successful in the workplace and in society. At its heart, is a set of six competencies students must master in order to take academic knowledge to the next level -- that is -- to apply what they’ve learned to real-world problems,” says Goelz. “One way to ‘go deep” is through project-based learning.” Read more...
Parent Satisfaction Survey Response Rate Increases Along with Satisfaction!

We are pleased to share that our participation in the Spring-2019 Parent Satisfaction Survey increased this year! In April, 2,628 parents completed the survey (up from 1,759 in 2018). As part of our survey campaign, we are happy to announce the three schools with the highest percentage of participation were Madison Elementary, Hoover Elementary, and Franklin Elementary. These schools will receive $1,000 to use for a student-related activity in the coming year.

Parent feedback is highly valued and this year, the District’s overall satisfaction mean was 3.87 (an increase from 3.82 in 2018). “The data and comments will continue to play a role in our strategic planning and continuous improvement. Taking the time to tell us what is going well and what can be improved helps guide our decisions and we are very thankful for the feedback,” said Superintendent, Dr. Marty Lexmond.
Franklin Elementary School Students Find What Floats Their Boat!

Franklin Elementary School’s Team Enterprise investigated a driving question: How can we, as shipwrights and engineers, design and build boats that will hold our team, using only cardboard, tape, and our knowledge of volume and buoyancy?

“This deeper learning project enabled our fourth and fifth graders to apply what they've learned about unit conversions, measurement, operations, scaling, and resizing,” explained teacher, Jordan Pollard. As they began the project, students investigated various types of boats and their history , and used volume, mass, and density to ensure their boats would float. After their research, students designed their boats and created scale models which they tested. By the end of the project, students had built a full-size boat and filmed a "documentary" highlighting their project experience. The boats were marched over to the pool at Central High School to find out if their calculations and designs would be successful. Click here to watch their documentary video.
Walker Elementary School Student Earns Second Place in National Writing Contest

Noah Vanderhoef, a 4th grade student at Walker Elementary School, has been named the 2nd place winner in the Letters About Literature Writing Contest in the State of Wisconsin. The Letters About Literature Writing Contest is a national writing competition administered through the Center for the Book in the Library of Congress.

To enter the competition, students are asked to write an essay describing a life changing experience that they have had when they have encountered a moving book.

Every state selected nine winners. Vanderhoef was the only elementary school student in the State of Wisconsin to win an award. His entry described how reading the book, Escape From Mr. Lemoncello’s Library by Chris Grabenstein, had a significant impact upon his life.
West Allis-West Milwaukee Community Coalition Peer Educator Projects Wrap Up

This year, a group of dedicated teens finished a schedule full of activities and youth presentations designed to promote a safe and sober lifestyle. The Peer Educators worked hard to help their classmates understand how to make positive choices and steer clear of drugs and alcohol.

“Students from Shared Journeys Charter School, West Allis Central High School and Nathan Hale High School attended the May Coalition meeting to showcase their accomplishments. They really do a great job and we are very proud of their initiative, creativity and determination to share a positive message,” explained Tammy Molter, WAWM Community Coalition Director. Skyward Student Information System

Skyward enables parents to make fee payments, manage lunch money accounts, and track their child’s progress in school (we only print paper records upon request). It also allows for increased communication with teachers. It is very important that parents maintain accurate telephone numbers and email addresses on Skyward.
