In Our Blog

CDLK5 has an estimated prevalence of one in 40,000 to 60,000 live births. It is one of the genes for which disease-associated variants are most commonly identified on epilepsy gene panels, and there is additionally a high rate of somatic mosaicism especially in males.2-4 Seizures typically present in the first 3 months of life, and associated features include hypotonia, severe global developmental delay with or without regression, intellectual disability ... New Gene Discovery for Rare Disease
The “Chopra-Amiel-Gordon syndrome” (CAGS) has been named in recognition of Dr. Maya Chopra and colleague's work. This new gene for syndromic intellectual disability has been described, and researchers at the Rosamund Stone Zander Translational Neuroscience Center (RSZ-TNC), are leading efforts to better understand it.  Dr. Maya Chopra is the Director of Translational Genomic Medicine at the RSZ TNC. The Animal Behavior and Physiology (AB&P) Core provides comprehensive state-of-the-art in vivo preclinical, translational platforms for in-depth phenotyping of models of neurodevelopmental disorders. The AB&P also enables the use and development of reliable and quantitative biomarkers to measure the effects of therapeutic interventions.

We are here to help you plan, manage, execute and analyze your behavioral studies. Along with running behavioral assays, we can offer you such services as training, help with protocol amendments, and analysis and interpretation.

AB&P Core (Behavior)

I have taken a circuitous route to become the manager of the behavior side of the Animal Behavior and Physiology Core. Throughout my undergraduate, graduate and post-graduate studies I have been more of a biochemist than a behavioral neuroscientist. Continue>
AB&P Featured Equipment
Optogenetic System
Doric Studio
Fiber Photometry System
Ethovision XT15
The AB&P Core has increased its ability to measure or perturb brain activity during mouse behavior. This increased ability has been made possible not only by our recent consolidation with the ENC (Experimental Neurophysiolocy Core) but also by our acquisition of fiber photometry and optogenetic systems. By linking Ethovision XT15, our video tracking software, to Doric Studio using an I/O Box from Noldus to control our optogenetic light source, we are able to stimulate or silence neurons when mice are performing certain behaviors or are in discrete areas of an arena.

We are also able to bin fiber photometric data based on these conditions, which allows for the comparison of neuronal activity based on the animals' behavioral state. This push to add brain physiology measures to our Core has been a major goal of the AB&P at the request of our users.

Meet our Investigators
Beth Stevens, PhD
IDDRC Member since 2008
Dr. Steven's reserach is focused on understanding how neural-immune interactions in the brain sculpt synapses during normal development and how this process can go awry in disease. She began studying glial cells as a research assistant and PhD Student with Douglas Fields at the National Institutes of Child Health and Development (NICHD) at the NIH. Lucky for us she landed here in 2008.

In addition to her passion for science, you may not know that she is a connoisseur of a special brew. Maybe she'll make a unique blend for you.
