The Trade in British and other European Ceramics with the Dutch East Indies 1820-1940

Jaap will discuss the organization of the trade of European ceramics to the Dutch East Indies during the period 1820 to 1940, as well as the efforts to cater to preferences of the local population.

Jaap Otte collects and researches European trade ceramics made between ca. 1800 and 1950 for export to Asia and the Islamic world. Among his publications on this topic are “European Ceramics in Iran in the 19th and Early 20th Centuries”, “19th Century Maastricht Copies of Chinese Porcelain in South-East Asia”, and “British Transferware in Indonesia 1800-1915”. Jaap has a law degree from Leiden University in The Netherlands and an MBA from the University of Texas at Austin. Jaap works at the Smithsonian in Washington, DC as the Director of Development for the Office of the Chief Information Officer.

Following a brief business meeting, we will share Gaye Blake-Roberts’ presentation on Britain’s Development of the Transfer Printing Process in the 18th Century and How it Changed the Industry, video recorded at the 2019 Annual Meeting in Birmingham, AL. Gaye, now retired, was Curator at the Wedgwood Museum in Barlaston, England and is currently an honorary senior research fellow with the V&A Research Institute.
  • November 5 - The 'Etching Revival' and Transferware: Aestheticism on the Dinner Table, by Jeff Ruda, Professor Emeritus of Art History, University of California, Davis, and TCC member.
