Funded by a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts, the Georgetown Lombardi Arts & Humanities Program will study the effect of music on ICU patients’ neurologic and physiologic responses.
The U.S. Department of Health & Human Services’ Office of Head Start has selected the Georgetown University Center for Child and Human Development to lead the new National Center on Health, Behavioral Health, and Safety.
GUMC commemorated the International Day of Women and Girls in Science this week with a collection of student and faculty videos exploring what inspired them to become scientists.

LaTasha Seliby Perkins, MD, has been appointed to serve on the National Kidney Foundation’s Health Equity Advisory Committee. The new committee is responsible for leading the foundation’s health equity, community health and social justice efforts through research, education and partnerships. Learn more here.
Laura Anderko, PhD, RN, the Robert and Kathleen Scanlon Chair in Values Based Health Care at the School of Nursing & Health Studies, will serve on a new National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine committee looking at PFAS, an environmental contaminant. The“Guidance on PFAS Testing and Health Outcomes” committee is sponsored by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. Read more here.
David H. Song, MD, MBA, FACS, has been appointed interim chair of the Department of Surgery at the School of Medicine. Song currently serves as professor and chair of the Department of Plastic Surgery at the School of Medicine, interim physician executive director of MedStar Integrated Surgical Services, and physician executive director MedStar Plastic and Reconstructive Service. As interim chair, he will oversee the department’s undergraduate and graduate medical education, provide leadership in developing opportunities for research in surgery, and support and mentor faculty. Following the January 28 pause on in-person hybrid courses due to an increase in COVID-19 cases, graduate hybrid courses resumed operations as of February 15. However, the pause on undergraduate hybrid courses will continue through March 1. Learn more here.

Contributing to the global fight against COVID-19, Timothy O’Neill (L ’77) and Linda O’Neill (N ’77) are committing $10 million to the O’Neill Institute to fund a new Center for Transformational Health Law, which will focus on the changing legal and policy environment during and after the COVID-19 pandemic.
