When voters in Chico approved Measure K a few years ago, part of the funding was allocated for charter schools. CCDS' portion was approximately $5.7 million. The greatest priority for our school was to replace our portable buildings with new permanent buildings to house our kindergarten, educational support services and our main office. These new buildings will go right in the same area where those portables are now. We are happy to report that our project request was approved and the contract signed with United Building Contractors to begin construction. We have been hoping for this for a long time and we are so excited! In addition, because of the cost of this main project being less than expected, we were able to add back in big parts of this project, which include a canopy lunch dining area, stadium seating near the gym, as well as stairs and ramps to get to the dining canopy, and the remodeling of the preschool and Transitional Kindergarten room. It's definitely a puzzle to put together but it will be great in the long run.
What does this mean?
Right now, in addition to distance learning & teaching & working, it means our staff has been packing their classrooms for the moving of the portables to the other side of campus where our Transitional Kindergarten and Kindergarten classes will be held this coming year. Our main office is relocating to room 22, right next to our preschool and there will be a temporary entrance to the main office off of 11th Street. Our student support services will relocate up to the library, and our STEM and library programs will go mobile, traveling from class to class. Entrances to campus will remain the double gates off the parking lot, a gate off the parking lot toward the kindergarten temp rooms, and the "fire gate" off of 11th. The basketball courts will not be available for part of the fall semester and parking will be a little more difficult. There will be a few other relocations of staff but those are the major changes our students and community will notice. We will of course keep you informed and have lots of signage to direct people where to go.
Things will be challenging and less than attractive for a while but the end result will be absolutely beautiful and our students will have an exceptional facility! If anything good can come out of this pandemic, it's that we were able to get a head start on this project and finish sooner than expected.
