Trabuco Hills High School Awarded Golden Bell
|
|
At the
California School Board Association (CSBA)
Conference earlier this month, Trabuco Hills High School and the Saddleback Valley Unified School District were awarded the Golden Bell Award for Equity and Access, Unified Champion Schools Program.
The CSBA honored nearly 40 school districts from over 900 in the state. THHS and SVUSD were honored for their Unified Sports Program and their movement towards full inclusion of our Special Needs students into the entire school program. Trabuco Hills, under the direction of Kara Johnson, has led the charge in the SVUSD for inclusion. With the support of the district, this movement has quickly taken root and the entire Saddleback Valley District is the first Unified School District in Orange County. The program has been highlighted in many issues of eNews.

Students at The Learning Connection (TLC) located at Rancho Cañada Elementary are working together for a great cause! This month, the staff and children have set up a donation bin to collect blankets and winter wear for the OC Rescue Mission. All donations will be sent to the Village of Hope Shelter in Orange County. K-6th grade TLC children have been collecting items since the beginning of December, with a goal of 25 or more donations, which will help meet the needs of those men, women and children transitioning from a state of homelessness. SVUSD couldn't be more proud of these students who have shared this mission with their families to give to those in need this holiday season.

La Paz music teacher, Dan Robbins, and teachers for the Autism Program, Allison Pierce and Andee Kridel, joined forces to bring the gift of United Sound to our students. It has been a great connection and collaboration for the students in both the music and autism programs. Their success resulted in Mr. Robbins and the Jazz band being invited to perform at the Orange County Department of Education's "Kindness Carol" Luncheon on December 20th in Costa Mesa.

Anthony Cruz, El Toro High School senior, and an AVID and AP Capstone student, was selected as a finalist in the Questbridge Scholarship Competition. He was matched to receive a full four-year scholarship to Grinnell College, one of the most elite liberal arts universities in the nation. This year, competing with a record number of applicants, Anthony was among the top students to receive a full four-year college match scholarship. He will be the first in his family to attend college and has made his family and his extended Charger family so proud. When asked to comment about this achievement, Anthony humbly said: “Although I would want to personally thank everybody who helped me along my journey, I’d like to think that my friends helped me the most, since we all went through the same difficult work to get where we are, and we always knew we had each other’s backs. So, if I gave up, to me, it would be like I gave up on them. I know I’ll never forget them and the impact that they made in my life”. Congratulations, Anthony!
