ILWA Update 5/18/2020
Join Us for the Worcester Nature Challenge May 22-25

The Indian Lake Watershed Association is honored to co-host the first  Worcester Nature Challenge! This is a wonderful opportunity to learn about nature in  and around the heart of the commonwealth... Worcester!

The Worcester Nature Challenge is a 4-day-long ecological exploration event exploring and tracking the plants and animals across Worcester and surrounding towns.

From May 22nd - May 25th, we are asking people to go outside, take pictures of the animals and plants you find and share in an easy online application called iNaturalist, a free app you can download on your phone.

More detail can be found here:
149 West Boylston Drive Update

Tonight, the Worcester Conservation Commission will review plans to clean up the property at 149 West Boylston Drive. This 4 acre property is owned by the state. The City of Worcester has a long term lease on the property which allows the City to use the site with some restrictions.

Many of you may remember the master planning meetings several years back in which residents were able to provide input as to what they envision for the beach at the end of Clason Road, Morgan Park, Shore Park and 149 West Boylston Drive. At that time, residents, many of whom attended all 4 public meetings, were overwhelmingly concerned about bringing another public space online before plans began to move forward at the 3 other sites which sorely needed upgrades and accessibility enhancements. Thus the master planning for 149 West Boylston Drive was put on hold.

While we await news on further investment in these neighborhood assets, it is important to note the positive results of the completed phase 1 improvements at Shore Park and the efforts the Worcester Police have made in addressing illegal activities at the Clason Road beach. While still considered temporary, the Worcester Department of Public Works and Parks collaborated with the state to replace the Morgan Park boat ramp which had fallen into such disrepair, it was in danger of being closed altogether (note that the boat ramp is falls under the state).

Recently, state monies were secured to remove the brush and overgrowth that has accumulated on the 149 West Boylston Drive parcel, the majority of which appear to be invasive species, and install meadow grass. It is our understanding that this will not open this parcel for public use and it will not take the place of the master planning process that will involve neighborhood input at a later date, after improvements at all the above mentioned properties begin to move forward.

The Notice of Intent will be heard by the Conservation Commission tonight (May 18th) at their 6 pm meeting. You can view the live video feed on the city's video on-demand webpage:  City of Worcester Video On Demand and  local cable access channel (Spectrum channel 192).

Immediate abutters have been notified.
COVID-19 Inland Boating Guidelines

The boat ramp at Morgan Park is owned by the Commonwealth of Massachusetts and managed by the City of Worcester. At this time, the ramp remains open as long as on site parking is available to support launching.

The state has issued guidelines for inland boating and launches during Governor Baker's stay-at-home advisory.

ANGLER SURVEY DEADLINE EXTENDED UNTIL JUNE 30th

The City of Worcester Lakes and Ponds Division, with support from local watershed partners, is focused on identifying water quality challenges that are directly impacting local fisheries.

As part of this effort, it's important to gather as much local knowledge as possible so that management solutions can be evaluated.

We have developed an Angler Survey which will be available June 30th, 2020 for you to share your experiences fishing Worcester's waterways. Fishing enthusiasts of all levels are encouraged to participate in the survey which incorporates a mix of multiple choice and open ended opportunities for input and suggestions. Please complete the survey and encourage others to participate.

Thank you in advance for helping us continue to protect, preserve and improve our waterways!

Neighborhood Cleanup Postponed

It's disappointing to announce our much needed spring cleanup needs to be postponed but most important of course is to get to a time where we can safely get together.

Please stay tuned for a new date.
WPD Indian Lake Neighborhood Meeting

The Indian Lake Neighborhood Meeting typically meets monthly. At every meeting we receive an update on the neighborhood crime statistics from Worcester Police Officer Lisa Carlson.  This meeting also encompasses quality of life issues in the neighborhood such as missing street signs, graffiti, illegal dumping, pot holes, abandoned vehicles, abandoned houses, etc. The meeting is typically attended by a City of Worcester Code Enforcement representative who is also available to answer questions about city ordinances.

Next meeting: Wednesday, May 20th at 6pm (Online vs in person TBD)

Please email diane.mohieldin@gmail.com to get the most up to date information on upcoming meetings and minutes.

When in person meetings resume, all Neighborhood Meetings are also listed on the City of Worcester website:
