Note From the Editor
Things are looking up. This is the general notion as we see host countries starting to pick up the pieces of an international education scene severely damaged by the pandemic. We now see quarantine requirements being lifted, reopening dates being set, enrollment figures inching back to pre-pandemic levels, and many other positive developments.

While there are still kinks that need to be ironed out, things are generally looking better for international education. Let’s just hope that this holds.
The United States Has a Reopening Date. Here’s What Travelers Need To Know

Foreign nationals headed to the United States have gained more clarity on their travel plans as the US government announced November 8th as the official start of a wide reopening of its borders to fully vaccinated travelers. The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has confirmed that all Food and Drug Administration-approved and authorized vaccines, including those on the Emergency Use Listing, will be recognized. Fully vaccinated individuals are those who received a jab two weeks after their second dose in a two-dose series, or two weeks after a single-dose vaccine.

International Students Crown Canada Top Post-Secondary Destination

IDP Connect’s “New Horizons” study reveals that 69 percent of international students rate Canada as their most considered study destination and 39 percent rate it as their first choice for post-secondary studies. The study surveyed 3,650 students from 55 countries in August and September 2021. The main motivation for choosing a study destination was future career opportunities while financial capability was the main factor in choosing an institution. Those that favored Canada did so because of the ability to be working students, affordable tuition fees, and reasonable costs of living. Only 17 percent favored the US and UK as study destinations, followed by Australia at 16 percent.

COVID in Scotland: Foreign Students Stay Away As Housing Crisis Hits Home

International students opt to stay at home rather than travel to the University of Glasgow due to the current accommodation crisis in Scotland. The university initially guaranteed accommodation for all first year and foreign students. However, the university sent out an email “strongly advising” the students not to come to Glasgow unless they have a place to live.
As Travel Curbs Ease, Students Flock to Learn Foreign Tongues

A significant number of students are seen in centers that teach foreign languages as governments have started relaxing international travel restrictions. An estimate of 50 to 60 students take German classes every month at the Indian Institute of Foreign Languages (IIFL) according to the IIFL’s counsellor Swathi G. He said students prioritize taking German classes as Germany is student-friendly and provides free education.

New South Wales Removes Quarantine From November, International Students Not Allowed to Enter Yet

While the country with the strictest border control is now easing restrictions, international students are still not allowed to enter New South Wales, Australia. According to Australia’s federal government, they are allowing Australian citizens, residents, and their family members who are fully vaccinated against COVID-19 to enter New South Wales from November. Aside from international students, skilled migrants and business travelers are still not allowed to travel to Australia.
PhD Students Excluded From ‘Unfair and Short-Sighted’ Residence Visa Policy

New Zealand’s one-off 2021 Resident visa scheme, estimated to provide around 165,000 people with a pathway to permanent residency, currently excludes postgraduate students and PhD holders in the eligibility criteria. Disappointed students call this “unfair and short-sighted” as the country needs highly skilled immigrants. Most PhD holders are considered staff and not students. Those excluded from the fast-track program may apply for residency via other pathways. A petition from affected students to expand the criteria in the country’s eight universities is currently gathering speed.
How Do Americans View International Students?

A recent survey by an education policy group showed that some Americans are somewhat concerned about the surge in Chinese students coming to the United States to study. The American Council on Education found that among 1,000 Americans surveyed, 43 percent said that they think international students take away places from American students. Meanwhile, about 40 percent said that they think “some international students are sent by their country to try and steal valuable U.S. intellectual property.”
International Student Enrolment Rebounding on North Shore

Schools in Vancouver’s North Shore area report a slow rebound of their international student numbers for 2021. While the revenues coming in from that sector is not up to 2019 standards, they are considerably more than 2020. However, the economic loss to the area is still significant. West Vancouver School District Director of International Education Michael Frankowski notes a shift in the student mix with significant declines in the number of students from China, Korea, and Brazil made up by the increase in students from Europe, Thailand, and Mexico.
Students Prep To Fly Abroad for Higher Studies

Several Indian students have already started in their dream universities in the US, UK, Canada, Germany, and Ireland, with the US continuing to be a top destination for higher education for many. Those who were admitted for the fall intake have already landed in the US universities and many are preparing to fly for the spring intake. Although several foreign universities are ensuring their on-campus students will be vaccinated against the coronavirus, outbound Indian students are taking no chances and are getting vaccinated.

Why Do Chinese Students Want To Study in the UK?

The number of Chinese students now studying at UK universities has now reached a record high. According to some international education experts, the key reason why the UK is so attractive to Chinese students is the economic cost of studying in the UK in comparison with the United States. The combined cost of tuition and living expenses is relatively lower in the UK. Also, safety concerns are lower due to the effective measures in the prevention of COVID-19 compared with other major destinations for international education.
Foreign Students are Struggling To Pay for UK Universities

International students arriving in the UK to study are struggling to cope with increased costs. Though international students have always been expected to pay significantly higher fees than local students, many have found that the new financial strain is too much. With the UK government’s traffic light travel system aimed at regulating arrivals to prevent the further spread of COVID-19, flights are rare and expensive, particularly from red list countries. Foreign students are expected to cover the costs of PCR tests and quarantine hotel bookings without any aid as they are not eligible for student loans.
