Dear SML Community,

Have you peeped at the Appledore live webcam lately? The “leaf-peeping” as they say in New England is fine on Appledore right now! The shadbush and poison ivy are fiery red. I have been watching closely for the black-billed cuckoo that was sighted in the Isles of Shoals recently. If you see it, let us know!

The end of the season leads to a lot of reflection around here. The staff recently gathered this week to share our thoughts about the 2021 season. My reflections included a recent Zoom meeting with a small posse of former SML undergraduate researchers that really drove home the value of SML programs for both career advancement and science. These five former students were calling in from across the country to discuss the impact of their SML experience. Most were in graduate school, and some were in the “real” world of environmental regulatory work. All described being excited and happy about their paths and progress. It was special to hear them credit their SML experience with helping to define their career interests, goals, and next steps. What a testimonial that was and a demonstration that we are meeting our mission!

As we move further into the fall and approach opportunities to travel to our hometowns or gather with our loved ones, I want to extend a heartfelt thank you to our community who has helped SML through the years. Without your generosity and commitment to our growing community, we would not be where we are today – a space that serves as both a launchpad for young scientists and a home away from home for many.
Warm wishes,
Jennifer Seavey, Ph.D.

Community Science Solutions to Seal-Fishery Interactions
Two SML associates recently published a fascinating paper investigating the community science approach to seal-fisheries interactions in New England. Dr. Andrea Bogomolni (pictured above), Interdisciplinary Community Scientist, has been conducting seal surveys in the Isles of Shoals for years. Dr. Owen Nichols is faculty for SML's Sustainable Fisheries course and he serves as Director of Marine Fisheries Research at the Center for Coastal Studies. They teamed up with Dee Allen from the U.S. Marine Mammal Commission to publish this report.

"This community science approach led to long-term relationships that have allowed for successfully applied, and community-driven, solutions. Here we share the lessons learned and subsequent partnerships. Our intent is to share our approach to address other marine mammal conservation conflict challenges, allowing for collaborative pathways toward long-term coexistence."
Mark Your Calendars for the Ocean Discovery Challenge
The Ocean Discovery Challenge is coming up on November 1 - November 15! We are excited to collaborate with the UNH School of Marine Science and Ocean Engineering and participate in our first-ever online/virtual scavenger hunt — especially fun for school groups, scout groups, and families!

This event will take participants on missions both online and in-person, where they will be challenged to make discoveries about our oceans, seacoast, and estuaries. Winners who receive the most points will qualify for a variety of exciting prizes!

SML Art Fundraiser: Bring Appledore into Your Home
When: November 6 - 13, 2021

Details:  We are thrilled to announce we will be hosting our second art fundraiser featuring work produced by SML Artist in Residence (AIR), Alastair Dacey! Similar to last year, a portion of the proceeds from the sale will support SML’s mission to provide outstanding experiential, place-based education enhanced through creativity and exposure to an artistic community.

We will be sending an email on November 6 at 12:00 pm ET with a link to the website where paintings will be available to view and purchase.
This event will last for seven days, ending on November 13 at 12:00 pm ET. Please keep in mind that pieces may sell quickly. The paintings will be unframed and shipping is not included.
About the artist: Alastair is a professional painter living and working in Portsmouth, New Hampshire. Combining his academic training with a taste for the painterly and abstract – whether a portrait, figure, landscape, or seascape – his work explores vibrant color, subtle gestures, and bold design. Alastair has joined SML twice as an Artist in Residence, and he now serves on the AIR committee. We deeply appreciate his continued generosity to help promote our mission in the arts and scientific community. Please be sure to follow his social media pages linked below!
