County Family Connection News

There is a worry that families who were on track to become foster families BEFORE the pandemic outbreak, because of loss of job or other circumstances, may NOT be eligible to become a foster family AFTER the pandemic. Unfortunately, there is also a worry that the need for these foster families will increase as availability decreases. PLEASE, if you have ever considered being a foster family or know someone who has...CALL BLAKE BOYER at 706-525-1130 for information TODAY!

Unfortunately, one of the MANY negatives associated with COVID-19 is that Dawson County Family Connection will have to cancel our annual Celebrity Waiter Fundraiser. We are very sad as we always enjoy this once a year opportunity to "break bread" and catch up with the community while raising money for a good cause.
-
We would like show our support to Ms. Jillian Gray, Managing Partner of the Longhorn's in Dawsonville during these very trying times. Jill has always opened her doors to us (and you) in a great show of hospitality, donating her restaurant space and staff time to consistently help make Celebrity Waiter a HUGE SUCCESS. We will miss you Jill and all that is associated with Celebrity Waiter this year...but we have
high hopes for seeing you next year!

What's your "why" for not doing drugs, vaping, or drinking alcohol?
Is it to be able to run a marathon?
To be a good role model?
A general commitment to good health?
Post a video or picture of your "why" on Facebook, Instagram or TikTok! It can be funny, silly, serious, etc. We just want to see
YOU and inspire others to do the same.

DAWSON COUNTY HAS BEEN SLOW TO COMPLETE CENSUS INFORMATION:
The 2020 Census will provide a snapshot of our nation-who we are, where we live, and so much more.
The results of this once-a-decade count determine the number of seats each state has in the House of Representatives. They are also used to draw congressional and state legislative districts.
Over the next decade, lawmakers, business owners, and many others will use 2020 Census data to make critical decisions. The results will show where communities need new schools, new clinics, new roads, and more services for families, older adults, and children.
The results will also inform how hundreds of billions of dollars in federal funding are allocated to more than 100 programs, including Medicaid, Head Start, block grants for community mental health services, and the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, also known as SNAP.
Please complete your form online, by phone, or by mail when your invitation to respond arrives. Visit
my2020census.gov

MAY IS MENTAL HEALTH AWARENESS MONTH:
You are invited to take Mental Health America's online screening snapshot of your mental health. If your results indicate you may be experiencing symptoms of a mental illness, consider sharing your results with someone. A mental health provider (such as a doctor or a therapist) can give you a full assessment and talk to you about options for how to feel better.

Building Resilience in Troubled Times:
A Guide for Parents
Families are under a kind of stress most of us have
never experienced before. Maybe you felt that your
family was thriving before the coronavirus pandemic.
Maybe you were already struggling to pay the bills or
faced other challenges. No matter where we started,
our current concerns about health, income, taking care
of children while schools and childcare are closed, and
other stressors brought on by the pandemic means that
almost all of us can use some extra support right now.

Dawson County Family Connection has created four newsletters over the past months in response to COVID-19. These newsletters are full of resources, most still very pertinent and useful today. Please keep in mind though, that much like the information regarding COVID-19 changes on a daily basis, some of the resources listed (even though shared only a couple of weeks ago) may already have changed too.
