March 2021
Welcome to March! Spring is in the air, and growth is all around us. Growth is not always easy or straightforward. When we grow, we change and we leave things behind. Sometimes things we'd rather hold on to. If you imagine growth as an increased capacity to transform, you can embrace the path you're moving onto.

This month's newsletter offers a practice for mental and emotional growth with a look into an Eastern way of approaching activity, information on a variety of herbal healing and relaxation options, and an a new blog post on the Five Elements and how color plays a role in your diagnosis and treatment at the Acupuncture by Andrea clinic.

To Your Health,

Balance in a Bag
Acupuncture by Andrea will start carrying high quality herbal teas from Urban Herbs in the office starting next week! We are so excited to offer our clients these delicious medicinal teas. Most of the herbal formulas acupuncturists dispense are now in pill form, but like all medicine, they started out as plants and natural products. The brilliant herbalists at Urban Herbs and Red Pine Herbs in Vail, CO, have created these unique formulas for those interested in starting their healing journey without a custom prescription.

Stop in the clinic and pick some up. We know this new product will be just your cup of tea!
Trying Not to Try
Wu Wei translates as "non-doing“ and it is an important concept in the Taoist religion. The practice centers on natural action, meaning action that does not involve struggle or excessive effort. Wu wei is the cultivation of a mental state in which our actions are effortlessly in alignment with the flow of life.

Flow is an action the liver, the organ of the spring, is always striving to achieve. Listen to the late Alan Watts, a philosopher that I highly regard, talk about the art of non-doing.

Relax, listen, and flow!

The Five Elements are a classification system in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) and a way of understanding the physical world around us. This ancient system was created to explain natural phenomenon from weather patterns to diseases of the human body.

Understanding the connections between color and the body’s systems and emotional characteristics can help an acupuncture practitioner to diagnose patients. Applying the five elements theory may help me form a diagnosis when a patient shows a variety of signs and symptoms that aren't readily diagnosed.

Herbal Treatments for Bladder Health

Do you or someone you know suffer from kidney or bladder problems? Issues can include kidney or bladder stones, frequent and urgent urination, urethritis, UTI’s, prostatitis, urinary incontinence, bladder prolapse, even pelvic discomfort, or pain in the neck and shoulders.

Traditional Chinese Medicine gives fantastic results when treating these types of urinary issues. From clearing damp heat to tonifying weak systems, acupuncture and herbal medicinals help balance compromised organs and restore the body to its naturally efficient state.

There are a number of herbal formulas I use to treat these conditions, many of which are recommended by herbal expert Dr. Jake Paul Fratkin, OMD, L.Ac., author of Chinese Herbal Patent Medicines, The Clinical Desk Reference.

Nuherbs, through the Herbal Times line, offers a number of formulas that address difficulties with urination including frequency, difficulty starting or stopping, urgency, and full bladder. These symptoms can be attributed to weak bladder, swollen prostate or an active infection of the bladder or prostate. Formulas available at the Acupuncture by Andrea clinic include Bie Xie Fen Qing Wan, Qian Lie Xian Wan, Jie Jie Wan, and Ba Zheng Wan.
