Dear Friends of Safe Harbor Lab Rescue,
Happy Fall! I hope you and your best four-legged friend can take some time to enjoy the cooler days with a walk through the aspen trees as the leaves change color.
Remember to order your 2022 SHLR Calendar soon, very soon. They’re being snatched up quicker than a Lab after a squirrel!

Donation Inspirations from Miss Chloe!
Here are three super-easy ways to donate to Safe Harbor. Through these programs, you can make a difference for a neglected rescued Lab like me,10-year-old Chloe. I had multiple costly health issues, including surgery. It took a while, but now I'm feeling GREAT with an awesome future ahead of me, thanks to Safe Harbor, my Foster dad and the wonderful vets at Alameda East Veterinary Hospital!

Vehicles for Charity
Finally, got a clunker, boat that won’t float, or scooter that won’t scoot? They would be perfect for our vehicle donation program provided through the nationwide Vehicles for Charity. Dear Labby: Will My Family Be Able to Fix Me Up?
Dear Labby is ready to offer advice on all matters "Labby."
Dear Labby:
Health insurance...my family talks about it ALL the time these days, blah, blah, blah! Sheesh, they could be throwing a ball or slathering things with peanut butter for me instead.
However, it did get me to wondering - what if I needed special treatments, or broke a leg, or swallowed some socks (by accident, of course) - would my family be able to afford to fix me up? Is there dog insurance my family could get to help with a really big vet bill if something unexpected happened to me, like my friend Lacy who got hit by a car?
I'm kinda worried...
~ Buddy R.
Dear Buddy R:
Happily, these days our families realize we're "family" too, and they can enroll us in an insurance plan to help with unexpected big vet bills.
Since we're Labs, we like to live life with abandon to the fullest! Things happen, even to the couch potatoes among us (such as getting your leg stuck in the recliner) and some oldster friends that may need special care.
Choosing the right pet insurance for you takes a little research, just as it does for people. Since your parents have opposable thumbs, ask them to hit the keyboard and check out this article by The American Veterinary Medical Association’s, “ Do you Need Pet Insurance?,” which includes a helpful list of providers to explore, too.
Stay safe and healthy, my friend!
Love, Labby

There’s always a retriever party going on at Janet and Bill’s house now that one-year-old Kirby has joined his new siblings, Jazz and Chip, at the doggie table.
Kirby is a rakishly handsome, good-natured, yellow fellow who has charmed the entire family and quickly become everyone’s favorite play pal.
These days, in between cuddle and kibble time, Kirby’s calendar is filled with hikes, swims, and other outdoor adventures, and this energetic youngster can hardly believe his Lab luck at finding such an active, loving family to call his very own.
Janet and Bill tell us: "Kirby came into our lives when we needed an active playmate for our 1.2-year-old black Lab, Jazz, who was wearing us out with playing most of the day and annoying our 10-year-old Chessie, Chip. As soon as we saw Kirby’s picture and read his story, we said YES…we want him, and it’s been a perfect fit with our family.
Kirby is a big loving goof and plays all day with Jazz while Chip looks on with admiration for the resting time he loves, and he even gets involved and plays along. They all love going on hiking and fishing trips and love to swim in the rivers and lakes. I can’t say thank you enough for what Safe Harbor does for these lost dogs and finds them a loving forever home. Thank You!
Many thanks also to Pat for fostering Kirby!

Volunteer Spotlight: Teri K.
Teri K personifies positivity. Just speaking with the new(ish) Safe Harbor volunteer, you can feel her joy and conviction in helping others. More specifically, Teri has a passion for giving to veterans and animals.
When she moved to Colorado two years ago, Teri looked to continue working with veterans as she had done in Chicago. However, the Rocky Mountain chapter for honor flights was not looking for volunteers. This did not deter Teri as she turned her attention on dogs. As a dog lover and experienced dog foster from her time in Illinois, she said to herself, "Let me see if people are looking for Fosters here in Colorado."
Teri grew up with Labrador Retrievers, her favorite breed, and adopted a chocolate Lab named Luke in the early 2000s - so, Safe Harbor is a natural fit. Her first volunteer experience here in Colorado was challenged when sweet 14-year-old Jed came to stay. She had to talk herself out of having her first assignment be a foster fail. "I would have kept him in a heartbeat," she told us. However, she helped him move on to his forever home, where he joined another senior Lab as a companion. "If you keep fostering, it can help a lot of dogs," she added. Teri then told us what she likes best about Safe Harbor Lab Rescue: "It seems like a really caring organization where I can help the dogs as well as find a sense of community."
Teri enjoys exploring her new home state by attending festivals, visiting Rocky Mountain National Park, and skiing. When she is not giving to others, she works in outside sales.
From everyone at Safe Harbor Lab Rescue, welcome to the community, Teri!
