A Word from the President
Happy New Year!

Many of us took time off for the holidays last week or the week before - or both!  On behalf of the KCK Women's Chamber, I hope your holidays were joyful and that you're starting the new decade rested and hopeful.

The beginning of a new year is always a thoughtful time, and the beginning of a new decade even more so.  It's easy in our busy lives to lose track of accomplishments over time, or changes of any type for that matter. To put the past decade into perspective, I thought it would be interesting to look at meaningful accomplishments and milestones for women:
  • 90 women served in Congress in 2010 (both the House and Senate). In 2020, that number is 126 (an increase of 40%).
  • In 2010 Kathryn Bigelow was the first woman to win the Academy Award for Best Director, the BAFTA Award for Best Direction, and the Critics' Choice Award for Best Director, all for The Hurt Locker (2008).
  • Becky Hammon became the first full-time female assistant coach in the National Basketball Association (NBA) when she was hired by the San Antonio Spurs in 2014.
  • In 2017 Peggy Whitson broke the record for most total days spent in space by any NASA astronaut.
  • Hillary Clinton became the first woman to be nominated for President by a major U.S. Political Party in 2016, and subsequently became the first woman to win the popular vote in a United States presidential election.
  • In 2018, Stacey Cunningham became the first female President of the New York Stock Exchange.
The list of other impactful women of the past decade here and around the world is a long one: Michelle Obama, Emma Gonzalez, Serena Williams, Nancy Pelosi and Greta Thunberg, just to name a few (you can read about The Independent's top 50 Women of the Decade and their accomplishments here).  With so many achievements by women in the decade that just ended, what can we expect in the coming one?  Only time will tell, but perhaps our New Year's Resolutions might include achieving our own personal and professional milestones as women to contribute to the cause. If so, in 2030 we'll be able to truly celebrate the decade.

February is National Heart Month. As the No. 1 killer of women, cardiovascular diseases forces us to consider that a woman we know and love may be affected at any age. Fortunately, we can change that because 80 percent of cardiac and stroke events may be prevented with education and action. Join us for lunch on February 19th to hear from Dr. Katrapati on how women can help prevent, be aware of symptoms and treat heart disease.

We will meet in Auditoriums B & C at Providence Medical Center. Cost: $20 for members, $25 for non-members
