Mayor Muething, Village Manager Scot Larhmer, Councilmember Peg Conway and members of the Environmental Stewardship Committee met on Thursday, October 14 to celebrate Arbor Day with a special tree planting and Proclamation. Members then assisted with final touches on the installation of the Patriot Elm tree.

Batteries Remain a Safety Threat for Rumpke
A recent fire at a Las Vegas recycling facility has prompted Rumpke to issue reminders and warnings to its customers nearly a decade after its own recycling facility was destroyed in a similar blaze.
“Batteries, propane tanks – even improperly prepared aerosol have the ability to ignite in the collection, hauling or processing of material, which could be catastrophic for our recycling operations,” said Jeff Snyder, Rumpke director of recycling. “It is very important that residents and businesses only place those items accepted in Rumpke’s program in recycling containers, and that they seek out proper disposal options for those not accepted.”
In April 2012, Rumpke’s Cincinnati Recycling facility, located on Vine Street in the Village of St. Bernard, was destroyed by a fire. While the exact cause was never determined, the fire started in a load of recyclables brought to the facility for processing.
Rumpke has since rebuilt a new larger facility and continues to invest millions of dollars to update it with the latest technology including additional fire suppression and detection systems to help prevent the facility from meeting the same fate.
“We recently installed heat sensors to help detect when items such as batteries enter the plant,” Snyder said. “The sensors have allowed us to catch several hot batteries that have entered the plant.”
Snyder said employees are also trained to look for flammable items both curbside and when they enter the facility.
“However, because so many customers continue to bag recyclables instead of placing them in their bin or cart loose – it makes it very hard for our team members to catch these items curbside.”
Snyder stressed that all items should be placed in recycling carts loose and not enclosed in plastic bags.
“Millions of residents and thousands of businesses depend on our recycling facilities to process and market their material to end users,” Snyder said. “Suffering another catastrophic fire at the site may result in the service not being available for months.”

As residents race against the clock to finish up outdoor projects, the Village reminds you to be sure and call 811 before digging anywhere in your yard. Ohio Utilities Protection Service can send personnel to ensure your dig site is safely distanced from any water, electric or gas lines. And while getting the job done can be a major motivator just to "wing it," checking first can save you valuable time, money and resources in the long run. For more information about how to make your call efficient and save even MORE time, visit the button and/or the graphic below.

Duke Undergrounding Project
|
|
Duke Energy continues to invest in the infrastructure of Amberley Village in order to minimize electric outages in our area. As of October 25, Duke has completed two of nine stages in its Amberly Village project for the installation of underground electric facilities. The stages completed include Belkay Drive and a part of Section Road near the intersection of Elbrook Avenue.
Duke Energy contractors are currently working on stage three that includes part of Elbrook Avenue up to Laurel Oak Lane, which also encompasses all of Royal Oak Court. The estimated completion time for this stage is the week of November 8.
Once Duke Energy completes this portion of Elbrook Avenue, contractors will begin work on Laurel Oak Lane. Duke Energy estimates completion of the Laurel Oak Lane stage to be around the end of 2021.
As the contractors complete stages of the construction, restoration crews will be following up within a week of completion to begin the restoration process. Please note that all estimated time-frames are dependent upon the weather.
